Default Air attacks at night

Ahoy skippers

Been away for sometime after getting sick of CTD's in the mediterranian campaigns. Seems like it's really easy to corrupt a save there, since there's almost always other units within your rendering area when saving a game.

Now I've decided to give the atlantic a chance. So here's my current situation.

It's June 1940 and I'm 1400km west of Britain. I'm getting attacked from air during the night.
I thought allied aircraft didn't have the capability to attack nor find me during the night.

The weather is foggy (medium fog)
I'm running TWoS 1.04 patch 14 with real nav

Now that I've thought about it, they've not actually attacked me, since the moment I spot them I pull the plug and get deep. But I assumed they would
Anyways they're flying at night in dense fog.

So I'm wondering, is that normal behaviour from the allied aircraft this early into the war?

Thanks

edit:And I just realized that I might have posted this on the wrong forum. Meant to post it in the SH5 forum, not at the mods

After a few days and many views on this topic, I'm guessing no one else has encountered enemy aircraft at night. Atleast this early in the war.

Maybe next time I'll wait it out on the surface and see if they attack or not.

Didnt saw it earlyer

I had the same "problem" when i got to scapa flow, planes have been flying all night and day over there, thats one of the times that i saw the on night.

In the atlantic u should have a carrier somehere near u so start the hunt.

Carry on

Hi Kapizi

Yes I actually encountered a task force a day from the air attacks. And yes there was a carrier. Buggers were moving too fast and I was out of position to attack.

There is a juicy convoy a couple of hours behind them and I'm preparing my attack.

Still bugs me that their flying at night in dense fog

ps. I haven't been brave enough to go to scapa flow

Thanks, Berbster. Feels good to be back. Started way back in 06 with SH3 GWX with DID gameplay. Have not done that yet with Sh5.
All roads lead back to Subsim. Or maybe Bernard is my navigator

Any take on the night attacks?

If you get spotted by some unit the game will spawn airplanes near your location even during the night, but they will hardly spot you in early war. If you stay undetected, the nights will be mostly "plane free" even close proximity of enemy coastline and airbases...Also , avoid sending radio messages when near enemy airbases, because radio-pelengation is also simulated...

Your 1940 Atlantic experience is probably related to aircraft carrier near your location...

Thanks for the clarification, Vdr.

Don't remember this kind of a behavior from SH3. Aircraft flying at night I mean.

I think I did send a message prior to spotting the aircraft.
I don't think it was common knowledge back then to avoid sending messages in fear of revealing your position. Although some captain's might have been suspecting this.
So in a way I was simulating that ignorance LOL

Draw some circles with the compass on your navmap . 300 klms radiuses from the airbases . Now look at any area where airbases overlap . Know where the heavy air cover areas are . Travel on the surface at night and submerge during the day if travelling in heavy air cover areas . keep your sub wake to a minimum . If you dont inform BDU of a patrol\contact reports then the chances of them sending you contact reports are slim . But then every radio report you send enhances the enemy ability to find you . Everytime you get spotted more and more enemy are going to know your position so are there too many planes or maybe you need to play differently .

Thanks, Sober. Good tips.
I've had a habit of doing a hydro check, surfacing, sending a patrol report and relocating right away.

Time to dig up my U-boat commanders handbook I've stashed somewhere and refresh my memory
