Default Newbie (sort of) help, please.

Apologies in advance....I know I could (probably) work all this out in the end, but coming to the game 5 years late, there's a lot of water under the bridge and a lot of reading I could do before finding what I want.....

I want to get up and running but I'm aware there were a load of issues with bugs etc...

1. I have a legit (disc) copy of the game - purchased near enough on release but never installed as I was aware my PC specs weren't up to it. They are now. Can I install from this? Or do I have to now install via Steam or Uplay with the code that came with the original game?

2. What patches are needed? And where to get them?

3. In terms of mods - what do I need? I can work out maybe what graphical improvements I want later - but for the moment what is absolutely necessary to make the game playable/bearable? I would like to be able to play a career/campaign if there's a patch that makes this possible?

4. In short, what do I install and in what order? (why I might want to do it would also help).

Answers might be affected by the following;

- OS is windows 10
- I have a Steam account, but not Uplay (happy to get a Uplay if it makes mods accessible)
- I have no desire (i.e. ability to commit time to someone else) for multiplayer.
- Played a fair bit of SH III (with mods) so am not entirely new to the series, but It's been 9-10 years.

All help gratefully received - thanks in advance.

Cheers Berbster - looks good.

One question - I note that the Wolves of Steel megamod has real navigation. I'll confess I never got to grips with this in SH III - and while I'm prepared/want to learn, is this something that can be switched on and off in Wolves of Steel? At least whilst I'm getting to grips with the game again at the start?

Hi PC
Code:
I note that the Wolves of Steel megamod has real navigation.
RN is optional.
If you do want to use RN then you have the option of enabling The Wind and Smoke mod.

Code:
is this something that can be switched on and off in Wolves of Steel?
Yes it just a mod that adds RN to the game play.
Just make any changes when you are in the bunker.
TWOS is designed to be played at 100%
Your new career realism setting will reflect your difficulty level.
This can be further customized by making changes in the game play settings from Options on the main menu.
Other game play changes can also be customized from TDW's Options File Editor Viewer (OFEV).
Depending on your new career realism setting some changes in the OFEV may not work even though enabled.

OK hit a problem....

Wolves of Steel install instructions as linked to by THEBERBSTER say I should edit the CareerHistory.cfg file....I cannot find this. Have found the Main.cfg file and edited, but no CareerHistory showing?

Given that I'm so rusty that I could do with playing the tutorial scenario anyway, I suppose I could do that?

I shall answer you with another question... Why did you skip "Step 2" ?

Playing stock game's so called "tutorial" with TWoS or OHII on board will only brake your campaign...It must be skipped...

I didn't. I only talked about the stuff I had a problem with, not the stuff before that worked fine.

So what's the answer? A complete new reinstall?

Hmmm - if I'm reading things right, I'm going to have to uninstall and start afresh because when I couldn't find the CareerHistory file I went and did the tutorial. Which will mess up my career.

It's a bit weird the file still isn't there, no?

Anyway, suppose I can download the file and insert it the next time if it doesn't show up after I exit the intro movie from the tutorial scenario - would that work?

ETA: Worthwhile uninstalling everything or can I leave the game launcher where it is?

Hi pc
Code:
can I leave the game launcher where it is?
Yes.

The uninstall process only removes the SH5 game and its components with the option to keep or remove your saved games SH5 folder.
Applications like JSGME are not removed and remain in the main game folder.
If you still do not have a career history file then down load it from the tutorial from Post #11

This is wierd - have reinstalled everything. Followed steps properly. Exited campaign intro while up on the bridge.

Still no CareerHistory.cfg file.

Can I just download the one that's been linked to and copy into the folder?

Is it a problem that despite the new install Uplay still has my old game sitting in the Cloud?
