Hey guys! Boy! Havent played silent hunter in a looong while. Decided to check out the state of SH5 so installed The Wolves of Steel megamod.
Now, my issue is that when I have visual persicope contact with my target, I open up the target recognition manual, but when I press "Send mast height to TDC" the input doesn't go trough, the target remains as unidentified and I cannot use the stadimeter to determine range. Am i hit by some innate SH5 bug, or this is some WoS peculiarity? Thanks a bunch! |

Hi kazeko
Lock the target first by using the space bar. This action will open the TDC If you are using the TWOS - Wind and Smoke addon mod you can now identify the target. Use the E key to open up charts and the Recognition Manual. Send the mast height to the TDC. You can leave the Rec Manual open in case you need it again by pressing the E key again Stadimeter ready to be used. Peter

THEBERBSTER thanks for the heads up!
I have downloaded Wind and Smoke add-on, but now my officer pretty much does all the job with ship identification. Is there any way I can do the identification process myself in WoS? What I mean is Approaching acceptable distance to target at close to 90 degree angle-> manually browsing the identification manual for the appropriate ship->sending mast height to tdc-> using stadimeter to measure range. Thanks for your help. ![]() |

Hi Kazakh
Lock the target with the space bar Press the E key to access the recognition manual Select the target type from the front cover Press on the recognition cover to open the manual Use the arrows at the bottom of the page to go backwards and forwards Find the target and send the mast height to the TDC Press the E key to hide the manual. Use the stadimeter to get the range Take more than one stadimeter range as this will aid your accuracy. You can pause the game to do this. As you can see you do not have to use the target identify icon even when you have it available Peter

![]() ![]() THEBERBSTER: I am locking on the target, opening the manual, finding the right ship and sending her mast height to the TDC. I'm hiding the manual, but upon pressing "use the stadimeter" in target range dialogue with the officer, he says "You need to identify the ship to use the stadimeter". Pretty much mast height is sent but ship is still unidentified. Now I wonder if it's a mod issue or some weird native sh5 bug. ![]() |

In either case, it seems to mostly be an issue for me with the UZO and observation scope, try the attack scope or else go a bit deeper and it might work. There generally seems to be a bunch of issues with depths of around 7-8m, surely there has to be a way to just tell the game that anything over say 8.5m IS surfaced. |

Hi kazeko
Quote > I am locking on the target, opening the manual, finding the right ship and sending her mast height to the TDC. I'm hiding the manual, but upon pressing "use the stadimeter" in target range dialogue with the officer, he says "You need to identify the ship to use the stadimeter". You are doing everything ok. I think the problem is that you are possibly losing the lock on the target. There is a lock/break setting in TDW's Options File Editor Viewer. There is also a setting that will tell you the type of vessel you are looking at. If the seas are high and keep rolling over the periscope you will lose the target. If you are trying to track the target through the periscope over a number of degrees in high seas then you are constantly hitting the space bar to maintain the lock on the target. For example when you first pick up the target in the periscope it might be 80 degrees or more away. What you should be able to do is lock the target with the space bar. Identify the target through the recognition manual or by using by using the identify icon and send the mast height to the TDC all the time keeping the target locked. Get the periscope's horizontal line on the targets waterline and pause the game. You should now be able to use the stadimeter to bring down the line to the top of the targets flag. Clicking the left mouse button should release the stadimeter and the range should have changed in the TDC. Peter

Hi goodpoints
I cannot see any benefit being at Decks Awash and putting the periscope up. You might as well wave a flag as well. Fully surfaced, using the UZO will give you a lower profile and less chance of being spotted. Peter

That said popping either scope up just enough to see over the deck hardly makes your profile more visible and the choice of 1.5x or 6x magnification vs. the UZO having only 7x can be beneficial in certain circumstances. The UZO also can't pitch upright to scan the skies. Also, and I can't seem to find historical info on this and would welcome any, though in-game the UZO has full 360deg rotation with unobstructed view, the location of the pedestal makes it seem like it would be impractical to use at much more than 90deg either direction off the bow if it was actually capable of doing so. ![]() Surfaced/submerged values are defined in submarine . sim file and current value is -6.5 m for submerged status IIRC... At first sigh solution may look simple but if you increase submerged value to something like -8 m more serious problem will emerge. The player will then be able to use diesel engines up to depth of 10m which is not good at all... Diesel/ electric engines depth limit is always 2 m deeper than submerged value from submarine .sim file. Maybe now you understand why this problem is not so easy to solve . EDIT: Your solution to use slightly extended attack periscope during deck awash surface attacks is excellent and I've recommended it in TWoS tips. This way you'll bypass annoying "submerged issues" and your stadimeter button wont lose functionality. Plus, lower magnification than UZO have will more suit close surface combat ... ![]() ![]()
