Default I'm back!!!!!

I don't think I've touched this game in 4 years.

I can't even find my DVD for it.

But right now I'm downloading a copy from Amazon (for $10). And I now have a high-speed, low-drag computer that should make my graphics infinitely better than they were back in the year '10.

I love a long, hard hunt just for one ship. And if it's a neutral? C'est la guerre! I used to love drinking schnapps and listening to period music (via one of the great mods, which one?) all night.

I'm also downloading the SF3 Front End mod. What else do I need to know about SH3 over the past four years?

And this time, I plan to be more aggressive.

Thanks! Looks like I'm going to give LSH a try this time. GWX was pretty brutal to me.

Welcome back.. I too have returned in the last few days to smell the diesel fumes again.

Let me know how you get on with LSH3..

I kept crashing to desktop.. Might re try a fresh install to be honest.

GWX is brutal but the detail makes vanilla look like a early beta..
I would love something close to the immersion and depth of GWX with AI somewhat closer to or at stock level.

Default Me too!

Well, as this seems to be an impromptu returned (returning?) serviceman's league, I thought I'd say hello.

I've been on a leave of absence for a while. Dabbled with SH5 but uninstalled it in disgust after a ridiculous Scapa Flow fiasco. It looked beautiful though...

Anyway, I find myself with a bit of time to kill so bought SH3 on Steam, long story but I think this is the third time I've bought it! Just installed GWX 3.0 Gold and looking forward to maybe even finishing a career sometime.

In case anyone is interested GWX to Steam SH3 install was easy, just need to re-direct the installer instead of the default install path (I've seen a fair few posts regarding this). And, I had a CTD at the loading screen when starting the first mission of a new GWX career. I didn't have this problem when I loaded the game vanilla (I couldn't wait to download and install GWX - I had to take a peek )- anyway, navigating to the physical SH3 Steam Apps directory, right clicking the SH3.exe and running as Administrator seemed to solve this issue (fingers crossed).

Also, I'm playing this on Windows 8.1, bootcamped on a MacBook Air! I never did find a solution to the Intel graphics bug...

Wilkommen to my fellow re-nübs!

Question for the group:
I'm playing with LSH this time (I used to use GWX). When I see a ship contact now, on my map/plotter it automatically shows blue for German, green for neutral, and red for enemy (Poland and UK since I'm still in 1939).

I remember I used to have to close and get positive ID on the flag -- and that sometimes at night the neutral ships would be running full lights, while the combatants were blacked out.

Is there an LSH setting or mod that will do add the "unknown" factor to the ships so that my plotter doesn't immediately tell me if they're friendly or enemy?

Also, I tried to depart Kiel through the canal and it was closed. It was nighttime. Is it only open during the day?

Overall LSH has been good. I'm on my third patrol. I did SAVE and EXIT one patrol in the middle of a Polish convoy. When I tried to reload there it kept CTDing. But restarting the mission was fine, and since then I've test-saved and reloaded in the middle of missions without a problem (but not in close contact with enemies).

Not sure how it really compares to GWX yet since I haven't encountered any escorts (in 1939 and just completed my third patrol).

Hey BROJD,

There's a discussion about map contact updates here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...ontact+updates

I noticed there's a mod from Frau Kaleun at the end of the discussion, but the link doesn't seem to work.

Anyway, maybe that'll point you in the right direction?

EDIT: Just realised the discussion's around GWX but maybe there's some useful info there anyway?

As an amusing sidenote, I'm on my second patrol and on my way out to the Atlantic diverted to report on the position of a Task Force moving fast towards the Norwegian coastline. I found them, and as I turned and ran, radioed their position whilst under a hale of shells. But they were gaining and I had 120m under the keel so I figured our best chance was to melt into the deep. After being pummelled by over 30 depth charges, they left me to it and continued on their very fast way. After conducting repairs and drifting to the surface we radioed in again. BdU chastised me for not being courageous enough! - Silent Hunter III is awesome

I'm a noobie, running both sh3 and 4 on Windows 8 pretty smoothly; no mods as yet since I'm still quite small and weak. Can anyone tell me, are the retail (disc) expansions for sh3 worth getting??
