Hi guys.
My questions is. Could we make Silent Hunter 6 like we wanted to be? 1: We have moders/coders 2: We can use a free game engine Unreal Engine ore Cry Engine, as long you don't sell the game you can use then for free. 3 a lot of people can work with 3D. 3DS Max, Maya, Modbox and Zbrush. 4: A lot can animate (I can) 5 many in here know much to get things about WW2 So is it impossible? ![]()

No, it is was meant to be another mega-mod for SH3, but they have put that on hold to make a new sim from scratch. The link for it is in that thread.

As long as you don't call it Silent Hunter 6 you'll be fine, although I wonder whether engines that have been developed for first person shooters would actually be suitable for a proper simulation. I don't know much about them so maybe I'm wrong. |

I think the biggest factor is just feasibility. Even with a team that gets paid you're looking at a 2-3 year development cycle. A couple of modders doing it in their spare time... The math doesn't really work out. You'd have to pay them for their time really, which means selling a product, which means engine license cost and probably additional licenses for 3D modeling and art.
Then there's distribution. On mobile platforms it's damn near impossible to get noticed because the markets are being flooded with cheap crap and their infinite clones. It being a niche game makes it even trickier. On consoles there's licensing costs and getting it approved for release. On PC things are much more open, but then expectations are very high; quality would have to at least measure up to fully modded SH3/4. Best bet at this point are projects like Atlantic Warfare and Wolves of the Atlantic, projects that have been going for a while now. From what I can tell the latter should have an "early access" release this April, former seems to be a long way off.
