The 13 toughest states for residential burglary, in order of maximum time and fines, are: Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, Montana, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Florida, Tennessee, Illinois, and Maine. The average minimum sentence in these states is 2.5 years, while the rest of the country averages under a year for burglary offenses. In fact, in South Carolina and Virginia, thieves can get locked up for life, and Alabama has a maximum of 100 years behind bars.

I guess your burglars have nothing to fear other than a truncheon or the occasional fireplace poker.

In my neck of the woods, burglars get shot coming or going. The police tell us if the burglar falls out the door, drag his sorry hide back inside.

I won't waste ammo on a thieving scumbag but, by the time I'm done with him, he'll wish I had.
Butt stroke to the head. Repeat as needed until no sign of life remains. Groin shots are just as effective.

While Nancy and I were in Hawaii, 3 people broke into our home and assaulted my Step-son and a friend.
They also tore up the house.
They got 3 years hard time.
What made it hard time was me contacting people and for a small donation?
Nasty things happened to them.

Seriously kids: as in the other post on English jammy dodgers, the best defense is a well bribed yard sign from the local alarm service; tip the guy a $20 and put it up with a few motion detector lights; for diehards, a little 3/8 foil strip in the window or small alarm stickers will do as well, along with a blinking red light camera (fake) over the front porch..The banditos will move on to other easier pickings after they case the joint! WOLFERTZ! no shooting unless the hole is predug and you have two bags of quicklime! No tryer of fact,(juror) 6 months after the fact, ever sees it the way you saw it along your gunsight at the time you were seeing it. Jurisprudential Monday-morning quarterbacking at its worst! You'll just be the bad guy.

Here in the UK it would be adviseable to put some sort of weapon in their hand after they have been incapacitated.
