So tired of the Irish "always drinking and fighting" stereotypes

As soon as I finish this beer, I'm going to hit someone.

I can joke, very proud of both my Irish and my German roots.

They should make St. Patricks day a permanent Saturday night "holiday".

If we're talking stereotypes - how can you joke with German roots?

I too have Irish roots, my mum was born in Cork but adopted and brought up in Blighty. This made it much more difficult for me to join the RAF.

I didn't know this, plus it's even in Russia, Japan and South Korean:

The tiny island of Montserrat, known as "Emerald Island of the Caribbean" because of its founding by Irish refugees from Saint Kitts and Nevis, is the only place in the world apart from Ireland and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador where St Patrick's Day is a public holiday. The holiday also commemorates a failed slave uprising that occurred on 17 March 1768

How so?
The British services are full of us Micks.
Unless of course your mum was one of those "peoples republic of Cork" types.

To get the required security clearance the background of anyone with family from both parts of Ireland gets delved into much deeper making it take a lot longer than other peoples' applications.

The forces have quite a few Micks, mostly from Norn Iron. I only ever met maybe a handful from the ROI - their planning for trips home on leave was never quick and easy, I always felt sorry for them for that.

Maybe this "holiday" should be banned. After all according to the National Transportation Safety Board over 700 people were killed nationwide in crashes involving a drunk driver during St. Patrick’s Day holidays from 2006 to 2010.

Do we really need to celebrate this every year?

Well, we tried banning drinking altogether once. Look where that got us.

Hmm. And here I always though Saint Patrick's day was named for Saint Bernard.

I didn't say ban drinking, just a holiday that celebrates getting drunk.

I know what you said. Saint Patrick's day isn't a legal holiday. What exactly would you ban? Drinking on Saint Patrick's day? Celebrating the feast of one particular saint because of the way some people act?

How would you go about banning it without facing accusations of being anti-Irish? You seem serious about it, so please explain.

Maybe we should let the victims of all those drunk driving accidents explain it. Oh wait, that's right they can't explain anything because they're dead just like even more will be killed this Sunday.

As for being serious on an internet forum that's all relative. I'd be happy if bars were just prevented from advertizing it. I think if it weren't for the hype the body count would be much lower. Ditto with New Years celebration (the number one killer social event).

Because banning a holiday that celebrates drinking is no different than banning drinking for a day. The one is as sensible - or as senseless - as the other.

How is that any different from drunk driving accidents on any other day? Driving while drunk is already illegal. Read your gun control arguments.

Would you be happy with banning all bar advertizing at all? Exactly how selective do you want to be? Perhaps drinking should be banned next on Friday and Saturday nights.
