Default Hello to all and a couple questions from a new guy..

I purchased SH3 (with seawolves expansion pack) a couple years ago and just now installed and getting into this game and I gotta say so far I love it.

I have patched it to 1.4 and recently added SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b which helped the graphics alot. I am running it in 1920x1080 since that is my monitors native resolution, now should I try setting a higher resolution to try and get better graphics or is there another graphic tweek anyone could recommend?

I have also downloaded GW3.0 Expansion but that was a while ago, how do I know if it is the gold edition?

And finally, how should i progress in adding different mods to the original, for the moment I am just playing right out the box (havent even installed seawolves expansion pack) but would like to add other mods as well, any good ones I should be considering?

Thanks for any help anyone is willing to provide

WELCOME ABOARD!

If this 'Seawolves expansion pack' is from X-1 games, then don't install it. It's a very old "mod" made by people who stole mods from Subsim modders, put them together and sold them for profit. There are now newer and better versions, or mods that replaced them all, and they are free.

If you're talking about something else, forget I said anything.

Oh, and GWX3 is the only edition, and it's also called "gold", so you're fine with it.

There are a huge number of mods which work with GWX. A good place to start is here:

thanks for the input, it is an X-1 game so I wont even bother.

I wound up installing the SH3 commander but, I would go to periscope, left click and look around but when I left clicked again it would launch a torpedo...couldnt figure out why this was happening, if I had a tube selected it was firing a torpedo. I then tried to install GW3 and it said something about a Jonesoft.txt file being corrupt.

Reluctantly I uninstalled everything (thinking commander and GW3 were not compatable) and fresh intall, patched to 1.4 and tried again to install GW3 and got the same exact error. When I tried to skip this file every file after that had some kind of error.

What am I doing wrong here? Am I gonna have to go thru the whole academy thing again before I start another career now?

It's a widescreen issue. Because the GUI gets squished and stretched into a wider screen the cursor location get's misinterpreted or something. I have not use the ResFix mod myself, but this has been a common quirk with them. I don't know if this can be fixed.

SH3+Commander+GWX3 all work wonderfully together, the jonesoft.txt file I would guess is from the mod enabler - JSGME - as it's just the text file I'd ignore it but now you seem to have made it worse.

If it was me at this point I'd uninstall everything (sh3+mod wise, including stuff in My Docs. folder), then run a registry cleaner and install fresh. Read through the install details for SH3 (get rid of StarForce! - see the installing on Win 7 thread), JSGME and GWX, follow them to the letter and you shouldn't have any more problems.

Once you're up and running with GWX I don't think (but will no doubt be corrected if I'm wrong ) that you need to do the academy stuff again.

If your native resolution is 1920x1080 and the game is fine with that why try for another resolution, especially one your monitor wasn't designed for? (Edit, just read Pisces' post above. Ignore me.)

Very important - bin the X-1 stuff! Don't let anyone else get their mitts on it.

Finally, for now, welcome aboard

It's also possible that you haven't installed the Commander compatability file that GWX needs. There is a link above Jimbuna's signature that will lead you to that file.

Take H-B's advice about reinstalling everything. If your copy of SH3 is older (earlier than 2008) then you will need to run the StarForce removal, as advised. If it is 2008 or newer then it doesn't have StarForce and you're okay.

If the entire game is uninstalled and the My Documents and registry cleaned you will have to do the Academy again. Trust me, I've reinstalled dozens of times. The bad news is that GWX makes parts of the Academy harder. The good news is that you only have to do the Navigation Course to get the full 1500 starting renown.

And yeah, the torpedo firing problem is a resolution thing.

That had completely escaped me.

I think I have a corrupt GW3 file. I did a fresh install, patched to 1.4 then tried to install GW3 and before it begins to load the first file (file mentioned above) I get the error. If I ignore that file, every file after that gives me an error too. I am not sure what this Starforce is but I am running XP so not sure if it applies to XP. One of the files I am telling to ignore is, data/air, which is trying to install Stuka airplanes. I don't see an air file in data at all. Is GW3 creating this file?

I recently got a virus a I am afraid to download anything at this point. But it definitely seems like I need a new GW3 file.

As far as the resolution goes, I decided on 1680 x 1050 and had no problems. Doesn't look as good as 1920 x 1080 but at least it is working correctly.

Thanks again for all your help, I really want to get this resolved.

StarForce was a security scheme that came with certain games (including SH3). It had the unfortunate side effect of deciding that certain disc drives were pirated and shutting them down. I never had the problem, but for some it was quite serious.

As I said, look on the box the game came in. If it's 2008 or newer, you're safe. If not, use the removal tool or get a newer copy.

As for your GWX problems, it may well be corrupted. Where did you get it from? You might want to download it again, preferably from Jimbuna's sig link.

uuhhhh, this cant be good...it says 2005 on the back of the box, I dont see Starforce but it did install "Game Shadow"...is this along the same lines? Maybe I should skip this during installation? Are there any advantages to installing Commander with GW3 cause I am considering not installing commander at all.

I downloaded GW3 a while back when I first got the game I am gonna say 4-5 years ago. I just started hoarding files for the game cause you know how it is, alot of the files are here today and gone tomorrow even though I never installed the game. I do know I downloaded it from the GW site though.
