Default Visiting Australia

I am in the very early stages of planning a trip to Australia as I have the summer off and yes I realize it will be winter down under.I know a few Aussies frequent the forums.Suggestions welcome, esp things that sort of not known but awseome to see, every place has them. I plan to visit Sydney and would like to see Brisbane and if possible make it over to Perth.Doing my research of course but nothing like first hand suggestions etc so suggestions welcome, thanks.

Uluru is brilliant, especially at dawn or dusk. But you can't just spend one day there, camp up there for the night and be inspired. Mind you, don't ever camp under a tree, drop bears will attack you...

Yeah watch out for them Drop bears. Think koala only albino, and a hunger for meat.

Sydney. If the Swans are playing catch a game of AFL. Or one of the many NRL matches up there. The usual sights too (Opera House, bridge etc)

Brisvegas, there's 4 theme parks. Out of all them I highly recommend Dreamworld and Movieworld. Seaworld and Wet'n'Wild water park (Suss name I know) aren't as great but they're not bad. There's Conrad Jupiters casino in Surfers, plus a multitude of bars, pubs and clubs. And the plus is there's no schoolies so you won't be putting up with 18 year olds getting blitzed every night.

I know next to nothing about Perth, I know the public transport system is good and that the Eagles are one of my bets for the AFL premiers this year. That's about it.

If you do decide to swing further south let me know. I live in Melbourne so I know the city fairly well.

You'll need to keep an eye out for the Yowie then.

If you are in Sydney I'd be happy to show you some of the best watering holes in town. A visit to Garden Island Naval Dockyard is worthwhile, but you'll need to get someone to escort you around unless there is an open day on. (last year there was one in early October IIRC). Not sure when the next one is. There you can visit the HMAS Kuttabul memorial where the ferry Kuttabul was sunk by Japanese midget subs in 1942.

You can visit an Oberon class sub and ex-HMAS Vampire a cold war destroyer at the National Maritime museum in Darling Harbour just on the western side of the city.

There are plenty of interesting little places around the harbour worth a visit as well, such as Bradley's head, North or South head and The Gap. Get yourself out to the Blue Mountains to get a look at the Jameison Valley.

If you are in Melbourne you can visit HMAS Castlemaine a WWII Bathurst class corvette or in Brisbane the HMAS Diamantina a River class destroyer. Not sure if there are any US Sub memorials up there but can ask my brother who lives in Brisvegas if he knows.

If you get time in Perth take a trip 3hours north to the Pinnacles which is well worth the time to get there.

Don't forget to brush up on your Aussie slang as well so you don't get lead down the garden path.

Bonza advice, mate. Another place is Point Danger, on the NSW/Queensland border, which has a walk of remembrance, just for maritime losses, and the AHS Centaur, which was sunk by a Japanese submarine

Thanks, we will be in Sydney so will most likely take you up on that offer as I am a fan of watering holes Let me know what you brother says, I found via google that there is a MacArthur museum in Brisbane(ooo) lol which I am sure is great but figured a US sub museum or memorial of some sort may be there as Brisbane was a big part of the PTO sub war.

Sounds good to me. Always a pleasure to show visitors where to get the best "water".

My brother reckons the only place worth visiting is the Queensland Maritime Museum which is where the Diamantina is. There are some models of US Subs and a bit about the history and its build on the old WWII dry docks where Growler was repaired. New Farm which is where the sub base was located is all parkland and modern apartments now so there's not much to look at around there from what he says, unless you want to sit under a tree.
