Default Japanese in the Atlantic?

so ive been playing SH3 for awhile now and i just recently got GWX and i was patrolling off the coast of Spain and i came across a Japanese medium cargo carrier. With me being in 1940 and Japan still being neutral to the US and other European nations why is it sailing in black out? and are there penalties for sinking it due to the fact they are German allies. I'm assuming there is but it still seems weird.

I think you don't get renown for sinking a Neutral ship.

No you dont get renown for sinking a nuetral
Not all nuetrals are lit
Sometimes you will have to identify by flag or take a chance and sink

id attempt it but i just hit a large convoy so i wouldn't be able to determine the loss or gain from it but with it being neutral or an ally i'm sure id take a hit

In the stock game no ship is lit. Lit ships are a mod. And sinking a neutral will not only not gain you renown, it will cost you the same amount. An enemy ship is worth 150? Sink a neutral and you'll lose 150.

ok i thought it was kinda cool seeing a Japanese ship in Atlantic but now im just getting flat out annoyed. this is the 3rd Japanese ship ive run into, why is a Japanese ship heading from The US to Great Britain? let alone doing it 3 times with 3 different ships.

This is why I modded the renown gains to give you 0.5 the normal renown for sinking a neutral, because I only sink ships (unless they are lit and have an enemy flag) if they are dark, because if they are not lit, it suggests they are carrying war cargo. If they're a neutral, they should have their lights on, otherwise they're a legit target.

Nothing really wrong with what you're seeing. Japan had a large merchant marine and competed with Western shipping lines for international cargo business. You are unlikely to see many Japanese passenger ships in the Atlantic but expect that the maru's will be trying to capitalize on the lack of competition from German companies like NDL and HAPAG.

Some neutral shipping lines ordered darkened ships in wartime.
