Default Silent Hunter on Win7 x64, what gives?

This may be a long post, as I have been at this for the last week and cannot get this to work.

I am running Silent Hunter IV Gold Version on a Windows 7 64bit OS, my game keeps locking up my whole machine whenever there is a lot of action going on and or whenever I look through the periscope. It also locks up when torpedoes hit a ship (when looking through the periscope) although it can also happen when trying to save a game.

Here are my system specs:

OS Name Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate
Other OS Description Not Available
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name GAMEPC
Motherboard: Asus M4A79T Deluxe
Graphics card: ATI Radeon 5700
System Manufacturer System manufacturer
System Model System Product Name
System Type x64-based PC
Processor AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor, 3210 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 3107, 4/20/2010
SMBIOS Version 2.5
Windows Directory C:\Windows
System Directory C:\Windows\system32
Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.1.7600.16385"
User Name GamePC\
Time Zone Eastern Standard Time
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB
Total Physical Memory 4.00 GB
Available Physical Memory 3.03 GB
Total Virtual Memory 7.99 GB
Available Virtual Memory 6.87 GB
Page File Space 4.00 GB
Page File D:\pagefile.sys

I have 3 partitions set up with Programs on the E:\ partition.

At first I thought it was my sound card causing the issue so I uninstalled that and enabled the on board audio on the motherboard, same result.

Reimaged PC, reflashed my bios to a newer version but the pc kept locking up during the OS install. Reset the CMOS, reflased back to previous bios version, installed the OS, game runs kinda sluggish till one gets some action then the whole PC locks up hard. I have installed Directx 9.x into the root folder of the game install, I have Directx 11.0 on the machine.

Yesterday I was monitoring what was going on in task manager, the game when you first start it up is running 904,032k of Ram and right before the game crashed yet again yesterday was using 1,121,136k of Ram. It appears that the game doesnt realize I have 4 gigs in the machine and thinks it has run out of memory?

I have reinstalled the game to stock 1.5 (UBoat version) same effect, I have turned down my graphics card, same effect. I have checked for overheating but that is not the issue.

Does Silent Hunter run on Win 7 64 bit or not, can anyone offer any help cause I am just out of ideas as to what this is.

Thanks.

Btw, I have installed the latest video drivers, then the WQL driver then an older driver, Not it.

Two sound cards with drivers both new and WQL

3 Bios updates, chipset drivers, Defragged, still locking up the whole PC, Hard Boot required. When I reboot and look in the Window logs, everything is reporting normal (except for the crash).

I'm afraid I can only answer that it does run on 64-bit W7.

Do you have an issue with any other games or just SH4?

edit: Also after your re-installs have you updated your OS?

Yes, OS is fully patched, I did try SH V, it happened on that game as well but both games are 32 bit and I cant stand SH V so if that game doesnt work it really isnt a loss for me.

Just thinking out loud. You say you've installed SHIV on the E: partition of your hard drive, have you tried installing it on any of the other partitions?

I have Win 7 Ultimate and currently have six different versions of SHIV (modded) installed on my computer and they all run perfectly.

What is the wattage of your power supply? How many amps are available for the 12 volt section? That can be a factor when processing power and graphics are at maximum usage. How many optical drives, PCI or PCI express, AGP, and RAM sticks effects the power supply? A 500 to 700 watt system is probably needed for your system. Was there a minimum recommendation for a power supply using the Radeon 5700?

SH4 works fine on my system of Windows 7, 64-bit.

Definitly something amiss here. You should have no problems. I'm running Windows 7 64bit without difficulty. A word of advice. Read the suggested "Windows 7/Vista" install procedure, and follow it to the letter. Create a folder on your C drive, and install the game there. Be sure to run and install as administrator. Make sure youre game shortcut is not pointing to SH4 GUI. Make sure it's SH4 EXE. Your hardware seems up to the task, so I'm thinking it's a software conflict. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck! Here's the install info:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=150997

I can definitely tell you, it runs on ANY win 7. Mine is a win 7 64 bit home premium and it runs smoothly. I guess you should format the device and start a clean install. Maybe read the How to reinstall SH4 thread

I presume since you did not mention mods, that none are installed. If mods were installed in the past, did any mod files remain in your SH4 folder before a new install? That has caused errors in the game even if all mods have been disabled.

My machine is 2.6 quad core with 4 gigs RAM, two crossfired Radeon 4670, and Soundblaster. XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro Series and 600 watt PS. I play a lot of mods mainly GFO, TMO, RSRD and Oper Monsun plus some miscellaneous ones. I have had weird crashes with mod soup leftovers. I have had weird crashes with torpedo explosions, too.

The task manager sometimes says I am using 1GB to 1.5 GB of RAM for just SH4. The 1.5 GB of RAM being used at the very moment is usually when torpedo explodes on the ship and the game freezes.

Memory cleaner from http://www.koshyjohn.com/software/memclean/ has eliminated some of my crashes. It is a much better memory performance tool than others that I have used in the past. The options section to trim processes' when usage exceeds 80% and trim processes working set every 5 minues helps the most. I usually save the games a little more frequently when I sense the game will lock up (convoys or at a point where game froze recently before). After loading to the main SH4 screen. I sometimes clear the memory process, 600-700 MB will be recovered. After a loaded game and a process memory clear, SH4 is running on 4-8MB of RAM. It will eventually increase. I usually alt-tab and cancel the 5 minute memory clear if I am within a big convoy or just about to blow up a ship sometimes.

Working fine on Win7 64 Business here.
I never install games on C:\Program Files, too many installation problems even if you run as administrator. I have a partition just for games.

Also I have disabled UAC. And finally, I read the threads mentioned above before attempting the install.

Works fine on my Win7 64bit Ultimate setup, with the game installed to a separate 1Tb hard-drive, no glitches at all..

Works great on my Windows 7 64bit machine. Only thing i can think of is make sure the game is using sh4.exe rather than gu.exe in the shortcut. Gu.exe causes all sorts of problems.

Had Similar problem with my new build computer. Win7 64 bit would lockup at begining of game. Other programs ran fine. After much investigation I changed out a fairly new Thermaltake 850 watt PSU for a Corair GS 600 watt. The Corair had voltages very close to optimal ATX spec and the 850 watt was pushing over the top limit. My new Radeon 5770 really liked the new PSU - problem solved. Often its the PSU that does us in. Always get the best PSU you can. A $140 lesson for me.
