Default Snow?

Hi All,
The recent snow in U.K. made me wonder if snow is included in any SH3 weather programming. I've never seen any. Could bring some more reality to the game, diving to melt the ice, deck gun encased in ice, threat to surface stability due to ice build up etc. Probably too complicated, but I can dream!

The snow may be on land or in the form of large ice blocks in the North Sea, but I guess there are mods for this stuff

There was a snow mod IIRC but you never got rain only snow. There is only one type of precipitation allowed in SH3 so if you mod to get snow that is all you'll get.

Thanks Guys,
I realised there were icebergs in tha Arctic and snow on land but wondered about actual falling snow. That has been answered with the precipitation info.
Thanks again.

Do you remember if it ever got released? I remember discussion about this, but not a d/l

I think it could be a good thing when combined with SH3 Commander (Replacing rain for certain seasons/locations)

I've seen photos of ice-covered u-boats. Having heavy ice on the tower must have given the L1 fits when he attempted to balance the boat for dives.

TBH I can't recall. I've had a look on my HDD but haven't found enything that looks like it. You may be right that it was only discussed but never released.

It was only discussed, never actually released.
SH3 Commander would be a great way to enable it though.

Then a bit of work on the Subs with a seperate dat in the Library?
You could simulate Iceing in 3D.
Tied to a StateMachine controller?

Maybe proggresive Iceing?

Should suffice to have trigger when submerged to make the ice dissapear, and reappear after surfacing.

Making it progressive would probably be a bit harder

There are a couple of skins that are specifically tailored to the arctic patrols. Of the two I can remember off hand one changes the hull largely to a white color to simulate ice, the other one shows ice on the decik itself and between objects on the boat. Fubar made one of the less weathered skins relative to the other. The other skin is hardcore, it nearly ices the whole boat up to replicate what it was like to do arctic patrols and the effect it had on ships.

Privateer is correct...the mod was never released but it may be possible using the 'date' function in Commander to make it 'seasonal'.

One of the 'iced-up' skins I use is the one by Shaffer 4 a beautifill Type VII skin....I can upload if anyone would like it.

Would love to get a hold of that skin for the winter patrols. Could you post it up so I could grab it from ya.

I doubt this would be too great an issue since ice is lighter than water and would melt fairly quickly once submerged. Once under water one would think the ice would act as positive bouyancy until the boat could shed it but as top hamper it would probably aid quicker dives and only greater speed would be necessary to drive the boat down dynamically with additional tanks flooded to compensate.

This would be exactly the opposite of ice building up on surface ships particularly those with high metacentric heights or those with limited reserve bouyancy.

I suspect that the biggest problems associated with ice accumulation would be having to deal with crew safety, frozen valves, forward torpedo doors in addition to iced-over snorkels, sensors and guns. It's unlikely that ice accumulation topside presented a significant safety hazard to the boat in most cases. Ugly and inconveniant probably but unlikely to be really dangerous.
