Werner Metzner retires after 9 patrols

My latest Kaleun has retired after nine patrols, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, 272,819 tons and one Catalina. During patrol 9 he sank a Casablanca carrier and was savaged by the escorts. For many hours they made pass after pass, wrecking a lot of equipment. There were seven escorts with the carrier, four of which pursued my sub. Finally they ran out of DC's but continued to ping and circle for many more hours before finally breaking off. I had no scopes or flak guns, no radio and hull damage so made straight for Trondheim as my home port of Brest was abandoned in face of the Allied advance. My career lasted from December 42 to November 44.

Time to start a new career at the end of November 44. This time of the war is agonizing: many planes and professional escorts; I saw one convoy that had about a dozen escorts.

Thanks, Vendor. I finished the war, alive. My next Kaleun did one patrol, and sunk about 30K. After returning to Trondheim and adding a few upgrades to his boat, the war ended. Time to start the cycle all over again. I think this time I'll start off in a II; it's been some time since I skippered one of those.

That sounds pretty realistic to me.....and yes, it does get a whole lot more difficult as the war progresses.

I absolutely love the randomness of SH3 Commander. I never know which patrol might be my last because I get transferred ashore. It's nice to look through my files and see how many Kaleuns I have had who served the Fatherland well and then survived to live a post-war life. Sadly, Metzner died four years after the war.

The dieing after the war is in the reports?? Thats exhilerating. But Congratulations, as of now Im on my first career still, starting from 1939 in the 2nd Flotilla in a type VIIB, which I still use, I think I've sunk close to 70,000 GRT in about 5 patrols? (I have 6 but one was counted as a patrol because I resupped from the Belchen supply ship and headed straight home so I dont count that one, I needed fuel)

Yes, Commander provides some information for each Kaleun, including his birthdate and place, service history before and during the war and a brief writeup on his post-war life. You find these by generating a personnel file at the end of each patrol. It also provides names for the ships you sink, plus their cargo details and number of men who died and survived. Make sure you exit the game after the completion of each patrol and then use Commander to view your log, manage your crew, etc. and then use Commander again to launch your next patrol.
