I'm looking for a simple how to sort of guide on doing manual targeting. I've played SHIII with autotargeting, and have been playing SHIV in manual targeting for a while now. I understand how to gather the data, I'm really just looking for information on how to enter the data into the TDC. Has anyone done a good tutorial on manual targeting for SHIII?
Thanks.

I use the Fixed Wire method. Fixed Wire makes range irrelevant.
1) Direct submarine course just in front of target ship. Set scope to 000. 2) When target ship bow crosses vertical reticule, start stopwatch. When target ship stern crosses vertical reticule, stop stopwatch. 3) Identify target ship in recognition manual to determine ship length. 4) Determine target speed by using the formula: (target length in meters * 1.94) / time in seconds 5) Direct submarine to course 90 degrees to target ship track. 6) Go to TDC. Turn on manual data entry. Set AoB to 90 degrees port or bow, depending on what side of the target you are. Set speed per step 4. Turn off TDC. 7) Go to scope. Set scope to 000 gyroangle. 8) Go back to TDC. Turn on manual data entry. Tweak AoB back to 90. Turn off TDC. Repeat steps 7 & 8 until scope is on 000 gyro angle and AoB is on 90. 9) Open outer door(s). As target ship crosses vertical reticule, fire torpedo(es). Steve |

This step is to minimize error due to my sub's movement, correct? So if I was completely stopped, it wouldn't make much difference what bearing the scope was on.

Correctomondo buddy. For the ultimate in Manual targeting, use this http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=114351 There's a couple of software versions too. Here's a link for the "How-to" http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=126824 It's pretty fun

Nice.
![]() There's just something about actually picking up a physical object and using it the way a real captain would. Of course, I also use a slide rule about as often as a calculator...

Sweet dude. I was using a straight Pickett slide rule for a while (Just for practice) until I found the templates I linked up here. Took me a little bit to figure it out, but turns out it's a M/S converter, law of sins calculator, and there was some other things too. Incredible though, if you think about it.

Try this one:
http://www.paulwasserman.net/SHIII/ It is an excellent starting point. Talks about the "Fast 90" method. ![]()

Yes, but in reality subs could not stop completely if it wanted to maintain depth control. And even if you are going less than 1 knot you can still mess up your speed measurement if you look too far to the side of your bow. This does not occur if the bow is (or stern) pointed towards the target and the periscope is at 0 (180) bearing.

Thanks to everyone for giving me this information. Perhaps I'll manage to hit a ship with manual targeting.

Yeah, I do use the auto TDC from time to time if I want easy shots but it feels cheap. It's like a touchdown when you do it full manual and once you get a few hits in, you're hooked!

Turns out that manual targeting is actually the easy part.
The last thing I have to turn off is auto-map-update. If you have to do your own map plotting, that is a big deal. You just can't go to the TDC anymore and dial in the torpedo with some lead and sink ships while you watch the little ship icons drive around on the map. |
