Default Is there a mod that tones down destroyer effectiveness

I am using GWX 3 and was if there is a mod that can town down the destroyer effectivness a bit...

My periscope gets detected from myles away (that due to radar?)

I am in the middle of a convoy and en early war escort is giving me a terrible time by knowing exactly what I am doing and where I am..

I am not sure if I am just not borne to be a Uboat skipper but seriously.

So, is there a mod that is compatible with GWX3 that can town down destroyers visual and detection capabilities, and that of Merchants?

Thanks,
G

could it be that your tower was revealed due to heavy sea?
or what depth do you sail when attacking submerged?

you were silent running, I suppose?

Default Being sneaky

First off....keep your periscope under the surface as much as possible. If you are going as fast as 1/3 or faster, they can spot a periscope wake from a good distance (they have good watchouts). Usually, if I am creeping up on a convoy, I go "silent running" mode and if I need to go up-periscope for a quick visual I try not to go faster than 3 knots. If the wind is 4m/s or less, it is easy for the enemy to spot your scope if you leave it up too long. Usually, if I need a firing solution calculation, I'll come to a full stop and put the scope just above the surface, get a rough AoB calc, then down scope. Wait....then repeat the process for AoB correction and distance. Calculating speed can be tricky if you have the map contacts off, but it can be done.

In rougher weather, I usually don't bother too much with calculations. If the wind is blowing at 8m/s or more, the top of your conning tower could get exposed in the swells...which makes you pretty visible. I just get as close as possible and fire all 4 tubes at 3-8° spread, set for impact then dive deep as possible. Sometimes the "spray and pray" method can yield some interesting results....

Find the convoy, get in front of the convoy, dive, all stop, silent mode, wait. Your ears are your eyes and only take a peek now and again. Select a nice juicy one or two then give them a good hammering.

The most effective method I've ever found to tone down a destroyers effectiveness is to hit it with a G7e/T2 torpedo

On a serious note though, I'm not aware of anything other than trying an alternative supermod.

Without naming names I do believe some of the destroyers characteristics are not as sharp on one or two other alternatives.

Try them all and decide what suits you best.

I seem to recall you could make the escourts less smart but it takes time to do it, that was 2 or more years ago.

I found one of my old threads it may help.

also your screws are a big factor in being detected- anything over 3 knots and they will hear you for sure. Remember they have hydrophones too! Try to keep your submerged speed to 2 knots, 3 knots if you must

however, if you still wish to edit the game files, you must edit the sim.cfg file located in CFG folder. Im not sure what settings, its pretty complicated.

Look into Sim.cfg, Section [Sonar] and play with "Enemy Surface Factor" (and perhaps also play with "Detection time"?).

GWX has Enemy Surface Factor = 100.

WAC and LSH have Enemy Surface Factor = 200.

I tried LSH months ago and the destroyers were weak, even in later years. Reducing Enemy Surface Factor to the GWX value made them better in detecting me.

Please be advised that the settings in the GWX CFG were tweaked easily over 50 or more times during the development phase and were followed up by, in total, a few hundred hours of testing.

The slightest change can on occasion have a wild or detrimental effect on other sensor/ability factors....getting the fine balance correct is usually the hardest part.

Change the detail by all means but don't forget to backup your file before performing any alterations.

Good Luck

I think the destroyer settings in GWX are far better than stock, SHIV and SHV.
Of course, when they get me, I feel they are too strong.

Thanks for all the hints, tips and help fellow captains...

I will first try different tactics...if I find myself failing as as a kaluen I might try modding or changing but first practice a bit with different tactics first as mentioned here.

Thanks again!
