Default this is how they should do Silent Hunter

Its a real shame that UBI couldnt follow Esims business model with how they deal with their tank sim steel beasts, meaning that I wished that UBI had released Silent Hunter V then at regular intervals say every 6 months or so would release new content upgrade which would have new features, improved graphics, addressed bugs etc which would be sold for a reasonable price.

This way we could end up with the ultimate sub sim and ubi could have a steady income.

if an expansion came out for SH2 in 2010, do you think many will buy it?

Steel Beasts is a 10 year old game, ALOT has changed since then. Back in 2000 your average games retailer had several shelves of asorted simulators for the PC, now you are lucky to find one with several shelves of PC games period.

Fact is, sims are not as popular as they once were, look at the success of the Wii - casual and retro style games seem to be all the rage. While 360 and PS3 can compete with the average PC in terms of eye candy.
In General, the PC seems to have lost its edge over the consoles as the games platform of choice, throw in spiraling hardware requirments & costs/ bugs/ patches/ piracy/ DRM into the mix and its not really hard to see why.

JU88 Best I've heard it explained in a long time.
Easy for even the slow to understand.

Sir Skip, perhaps, but i trust some fine members (Moderators) within our community are already exercising or prepairing their skills to these matters (apparent wishes) already.

And now the question is:

What is the best way we (people who don't have sufficient skills, time, experience, etc.) could support the 'Modder'?

Any idea..

(of course make a donation to subsim is always good, but I thought maybe we could do something else)

Yep
Make some time, learn the skills, gain experience, get stuck in and share the load!
Anyone can learn a little bit.
There is no other way - you cannot start paying a modder, (at least not in public ) it would be a disaster and probably result in bad feelings and a lawsuit or 10.
The Publisher would go nuts if you didnt get their permission, modifiying the contents of licensed software and distributing it for FREE is already treading on thin ice from a legal perspective.
But 'FREE' is the only reason they are cool with us doing it - generally speaking.

Well im not modding guru myself, So i would need to learn also, in GWX i was just a 3d & texture guy.
I dont think we will ever see a mass combined community effort with total co-operation accross the board because:

Constant communiaction is needed to avoid duplicating work and keeping consistancy
People will always disagree on what and how it should be done or driven
Some are unable to handle critism or take things personally.
Some will not want to share their successes or know-how with others.
Some will want to exploit others successes or know-how for ther own personal gain (rather than just learn from it).
Some will want to be 'in charge'.
Some will just want to compete.

Its all very sillly really -but hey ho thats just the way it goes from time to time... we're only human after all.
Dont get me wrong, we are lucky to have a great modding community for SH, but not everyone is sailing under the same flag

Having a huge workload will wear any modder out fast. I think very few people have any idea how much work goes into some of the mods, let alone a supermod. I know i won't ever attempt what i did in SH4 ever again, it's just too much work. Nobody here will probably believe it, but for awhile, between my normal RL job, and modding at night, i was having 18 to 20 hour days for a week or two at a time.

I do believe it, that's why I wrote post #6.

It would be so great if you guys could work on it as a full time job.

But that's probably just impossible, seems like there's way too much dissent and/or legal issues.

I wish. I'm probably more skilled at tweaking SH 3/4 then i am at my RL job by now. Not saying i know everything, (far from it) but after awhile, i felt like i was working on a 2nd unpaid job. It's like i've acquired this useless job skill that has no value anywhere in the real world.

Depends on the people involved. JU_88 might be referring to all the people of the "old guard" in modding. Those are personalities that have been around awhile and have formed longstanding opinions about each other and their work. So lots of sillyness there. I saw more cooperation with SH4 modders. Lots of cross pollination of ideas and mods, admitidly, regardless of forum, there's always mod politiics involved to some degree. I've always had to think about what im saying to others so as to not step on their toes and cause friction. Not saying their touchy, i just think that's just the nature of a modding community in general.

@Ducimus

I have no idea what would be the solution, but...

If I can do anything to support the genre, I will.

No matter ATO or PTO (even if I have a preference for ATO, and hopefully with wolfpacks).

And who knows, maybe someday I'll be tired of ATO and will discover new aspects of PTO..

But you see , your work is appreciated by tens of thousands of people in the real world .
