I notice that at a certain point, it doesn't seem to be possible to pull out of a dive unless one blow's ballast. What's the deal w/that?

many reasons, actually
happens to me sometimes, when the boat is damaged, or when you didnt let a crash dive properly level out at 70m, or when you get down below 200m i never actually know why my boat isnt doing what i thought she should do, i love it, adds to the immersion ![]() a good way to arrest a dive is to go full reverse while the nose is pointing down

I've suffered this a number of times. I've even hit the bottom, repaired damage and then had to rely on blowing ballast to raise me off the bottom. It seems to happen when I'm running at Ahead Slow (or when my engines are damaged), as if the diving planes don't have enough lift at very low speeds.
There's bound to be some technical reason for it...

Hiii
One time i was attack by a convoy escorts and i was badly damage and with a heavy flotting...it was a true voyage to hell because...when i was falling in to the sea botton the (U-boat VII C type) resist to the pression and i only stop at 505 meters deep! After long hours reparing the damages and the flotting i was able to repair must everything...when i was ready ( like the film Das Boot) to blow ballasts the u-boat dont even move...so i try to use all the compressed air in the tubes...no result at all...i try for long hours lift by U-boot from the botton but the time was out and all so the air...result i was buried alive with my crew at 505 meters in the sea floor! It was my worsth experience until now playing SH3 GWX...very traumatic, stressfull, experience of all! ![]()

Actually, guys, that's supposedly a bug. Your boat is supposed to be dead at that point. If I could find the thread where I saw this previously mentioned, I'd show it to you.

You should also notice that in depths of 200metres plus you need to put a few more revs on the clock to help prevent her from sinking sloooowly out of control. Keep a watchful eye on the depth guage. |

I took the time to practice crashdives in 50 mtrs or less using telegraph and blowing ballast with good results to the point of not hitting the bottom and not getting damaged by aerial bombs.
Definitely a benifit if your patroling off the E. coast of USA closein. Pesky aircraft. |

I'm unsure about what is exactly modelled in the game and what not, but in real submarines there are lots of factors that can cause uncontrolled dives (And rises).

![]() ![]() This was a very quick external cam shot of my IXB sub going down for the last time. Full reverse engines, blow ballast x10, damage control wrenching out massive pressure leaks as they go tumbling to the bow. About the only thing that could have lessened the dive (maybe?) was to have been able to send surplus crew to the stern, and fast. I did learn some new lessons since this time out. |

Look for: [Properties] PeriscopeDepth=13.5;meters 12.5 SnorkelDepth=7.8;meters CrashDepth=140;meters MaxDepth=500;meters SurfaceDepth=8;meters TorpLaunchMaxDepth=20;meters StormConditions=11,0.4;max wind speed [m/s], max rain intensity [0,1] My IXC is modded because I use it in deep water, hence 140m is a decent crash depth for the way I play.
