Silent Hunter IV VISTA 64bit problem

Hello

Anyone out there have any tips for how to get the game to play in Vista 64bit?

After installing the game the Intro is the only thing working. I can hear the sounds from the game but I get a black screen.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Vidar, Norway!

Other than Vista, what are the computer specs you are attempting to play the game on?

With regards to Vista 64 apparently it works fine: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...38&postcount=4
But no specifics regarding how.

As AVG mentioned, best to also know what your specs are besides Vista.

I have the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
ASUS Motherboard P5N32-SLI
4 gb Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320mb
Vista Ultimate 64-bit

I have downloaded the 1.4 patch but its still a black screen after the intro.

Any thoughts for what I can do?

I have almost identical system as you (I have a GTX instead of a GTS). I ran Silent Hunter 4 v1.4 no problem in Vista 64 Ultimate. If it asks you to install DirectX 9 drivers you must allow it since this game (and many others) require DirectX 9 to run.

Black screen after intro is a possible codec issue? Some people have had problems with the K-Lite codec pack, and some others that result in a black screen intro. Do you have a codec pack installed?

I've been running SH4 with Vista 64bit for a very long time. I haven't seen your problem at all. As someone else said it could be a Codec issue although I have K-lite installed. I don't install games to the "Program files" folders, they are problematic if installed in there due to special permissions set by default on that folder. I would try installing it to C:\Games\SH4 or something like that. Another thing you could try is right click on the shortcut and select "Run as Administrator".

As a Zanthan said it is pretty essential that you let the game install DX9.

My specs are are quite similar to yours.

Well, it is quite easy to reinstall if it doesn't fix the problem, so its probably worth a try. I've also had the K-Lite 64bit codec pack installed and didnt have any SH4 issues either, but looking at other threads of people with the same problem that seems to be a common fix.

No that didn`t help..tried to uninstall both the Xvid-codec and the other codec pack but I still get a black screen...

I`ll try to reinstall the game and hope for the best...

Do you have DirectX 9 installed and updated? I'm almost positive that you have to have it for the game to work, whether you have DX10 or not.

When I installed sh4 on my vista64 machine I had the same issue. I believe I fixed it by going into the nvidia control panel and setting all the options to stock - disable all AA/AF, turn off multi/supersample, turn off multi core support, etc. I ran it, changed screen resolution to what I wanted, then exited and reenabled the nvidia stuff.

Also set the SH4.exe to run as administrator.

And as DT said above, make sure to install DX9.

Right click on desktop, select nvidia control panel, go through the settings. If you've never changed these to begin with, they are probably already at stock values and this won't help. But it's worth a shot I guess. If you do change something, write down the old value so you can change it back later. You want to set:

Anisotropic filtering - app controlled
Gamma correction - off
antialiasing - app control
aa transparency - off
force mipmap - none
texture filtering - off
texture filtering quality - quality
trilinear optim - off
threaded optim - off
triple buffer - off
force vsync - off

Set those and then try to load the game. If you get to the main menu, set your desired resolution and graphic settings, then exit. Now you can go back to the nvidia control panel and turn those things back on. If it blacks out again, you'll want to reset those options again, then go through them one by one until you find the one that causes the black screen.

EDIT: Congrats! I don't know why that works or how, but thank god it does
