Default Twas the Night Before U-boats

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the boat

Not a creature was stirring, not the watch with their coats;

The stockings were hung by the periscope with care,

In hopes that St. Doenitz soon would be there;

The crew were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of freighters danced in their heads;

And Marlene in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long depth charge nap,

When out on the deck there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the turm I flew like a flash,

Tore open the hatch, my fingers I mashed.

The shadows of tankers for the next big show,

Gave the lustre of night to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature U-boat, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, is his name Fritz?

But I knew in a moment it must be St. Doenitz!

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Gunter! now, Herbert! now, Thomsen and Kurt!

On, Erich! on Johann! on, Vincent and Bert!

To the top of the Con! to the top of the sea-wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the turm-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of ships, and mini tankers too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the deck,

The dirty raindeer pawing, my they were a wreck.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the ladder St. Doentiz came with a bound.

He was dressed all in Blue, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with oil and soot;

A bundle of tonage he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as grey as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a narrow face and a little flat belly,

That stuck, when he laughed like a glue made of jelly.

He was skinny and thin, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon let the Brits know they had lots to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the ladder he rose;

He sprang to his boat, to his crew gave a whistle,

And away they all submerged like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he dived out of sight,

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."
