Umm, no they weren't. Even in the manual, it says that U-boots historically carried 220 HE rounds only. No sense in bringing star shells in a a submarine, or AP rounds. When would you ever use them?

You are correct....they could, but in RL it is doubtful whether they ever did and as yet nobody has posted a link to a definitive source.

A link to your source would be helpful.

Where does it say that star shells and AP rounds were issued? The fact is, just because you can use a certain type of ammunition, doesn't mean you should. Say you're hunting birds, you wouldn't use Deer Slug would you?

The U-Boot deckguns (8.8 and 10.5 cm) were modified guns, developed pre-WWI for surface units to defend against torpedo-boats.

They were capable to use the HE as the AP and SS shells. Well, for a U-Boot there was no use for AP and SS ammunition, but the gun could have shot them.

Some misunderstanding may be caused in translation of "can/could".
