Default '39 Channel?

Hmm... I'm wondering. With an IX-B leaving Wilhelmshaven on December 2nd 1939 to reach sector BE... does it make any sense to try the channel route instead of Scapa?

In theory, at that year in time radar was in its early days of development. A good watch officer and submerging through the tricky bits will help. It will certainly get the adrenalin running!!

good luck

Untill my flotilla moved to French coast, I always passed through the Channel, surfaced at night, deck awashed.

I would not dare doing it later in the war, but there's no need for it later.

Hmmm... I think I might want to try. Do I have to expect mines this early?

EDIT: Ahh "Decks awash". I just remember that, how did you trigger that? (i'll remember again sooner or later, it was about clicking somewhere on the tiefenmesser i think *ponder*)

Set the depth to 6-7 m (I think it depends of a u-boat type).

And yes, you should expect mines.

Interesting. Not that I know very much about the history, but I wouldn't have expected the English to be so paranoid that early?

Heres the rules for crusing the channed.

1 dont dive if you dont have to, that place is mine heven, Ive seen hundreds of mines on my channel trips (done it in 41)

2 stay on french coast.

3 when you dive go veary slow with little to no TC becuase of mines, they are everywhere.

4 dont radio out, theyl pick up on ya.

Im sure there are more but thats pretty much it.

41? Radio? Hey, we don't even know active sonar

Probably Scapa would be the better route in 1939 just for the pickouts.... but crossing the channel on my first patrol sounds actually like fun. I can take the Scapa Route on my way back.

Still have time to decide, just 90 minutes out of Wilhelmshaven

Go the channel, no to bad at the begining of the war. ( will not be able to do that later) lots of tonage in the channel. Dover is a fun port to raid then, Just a sub net, there is a entrence right next to the breakwater on the outer part.

Just to offer an alternative point of view...

You have an IX! Why go through the channel when you have more than enough fuel to go around? Seems a pointless risk to me.

But if you're seeking thrills...

We have been paranoid about the Channel ever since 1066!

The people on the channel are divided into two groups, the paranoids and the loonies. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'd say there's a third group: paranoid loonies. They are those who survives.
