Default U94 in Trouble

So I swapped out my trust U50 VIIB boat for U94, a VIIC.

I'm in my second patrol in her and heading into the Irish sea a juicy fat convoy was heading my way. Perfect. I began to maneuver into a firing position, was rigged for silent running and was at PD. I passed kinda close to one of the destroyers, but not dangerously close.

I'm not making a squeak, when suddenly his ASDIC opens up and he starts pinging me STRAIGHT AWAY!!!! I immidiatly aborted the attack and took U94 down as far as depth permitted, which was some 105 meters. I've taken some damage from DC attacks, but I can't hold the boat's depth, its become rear end heavy with some flooding. Each time I set a new depth, the boats ass drags it down and i get stuck on the seabed.

Would you guys recommend that I get rid of ALL the water from the rear compartments in order to make the boat easier to manage?? But that means securing from silent running, and making noise. I dont want to keep blowing my ballest every time I want to get the boat off the seabed.

Its only December 4th 1940, there's no way that destroyer could've known I was there. I was rigged for silent and not making a sound I tells you!!!! its impossible for him to have known I was there.

The Irish Sea you say? Celebrating St Paddy's Day a bit early?
I would forsake the silent running and get the damage control team busy while you try to maintain your depth and evade, trying to keep your profile small. Once you have pumped out the rear compartments try to set up again. If it's Dec 1940, you only have a slim chance of getting away.

You are better off, pumping and running than sitting in one spot. Either way, your situation is not so good.

I don't recommend messing with convoys when the depth is much less than 200 meters.

Repairing damage and getting underway again is critical. If you just sit there at 105m, he'll drop one right down yer hatch. Full speed ahead, set depth to 90m, full damage repair team - blow a decoy once you get going. You have to get outside of their radius! Shallows are deadly - i've lost my last two boats on the british shelf - 140m or so.

As everyone has said, fix up the boat and then go back to silent running, don't forget to go to ahead flank when he drops cans on you,he is deaf when they are going off and this buys you some time to gain some space and gain a new position, try to head for where the water is indicated deepest,he can't hear you sonar bounce the bottom,so go looking for every meter of extra depthbest of luck, its do-able but your going to have to be so cunning they could stick a tail on you and call you a fox

Shouldn't be TOO hard to do

It still upsets me how the heck he knew I was there in the first place. As i've said, i was creeping past the front DD rigged for silent, and then his ASDIC pings me straight away and they all know where I am somehow!!!

Although, I do believe that in real life, destroyers would use their active sonor all the time, even when they hadn't detected a sub. As this would've increased the chance in detecting one that was trying to sneak into the convoy. I remember the very FIRST silent hunter.

Those Jap DD's ran on active sonor all the time

Ok, U94 really is in a spot of bother now. Same patrol which I resumed tonight. I surived the encouter with the convoy DD's and abandoned the attack on that convoy. Surfaced and 3 days later recieved about a convoy heading SW aft of my boat.

I swung around and ran at Flank to get near and intercept them. I was on the surface at night, perfectly calm sea and was spotted by the lead escort. A corvette I think it was.

I've now had to abandon the attack totally on this convoy AND the mission also. I've made the decision to return to Lorient given the shape the boat is in. I've saved it jst now and i'm still under attack but, here's a damage rundown:

Forward deck destroyed
Attack & Obs scopes both destroyed
Flak gun (twin barrel) destroyed
Deck gun destroyed
Radio antenne destroyed

I'm not in a good way. If i survive this attack, U94 is heading home!!!! We're in no fit state for anything anymore. Add the fact the boat has been scraped along the seabed more times than I care to count.

I think I shall avoid the Irish sea from now on!!!

U-Boats like deep water. I hope you survive your present patrol so that you can buy me a drink.

Well Brag, I think you'll be pleased that I report U94 made it safely home. With the extensive damage to the boat, she was laid up in Lorient for 2 months while repairs were effected, and for some odd reason, BDU saw fit to award me the highest of the high in medals, the Knights Cross with Golden Oak leaves, Swords, and Diamonds....why is beyond me as the patrol was an utter disaster!!!!!

I shall avoid the Irish sea from now on, skirting round the west of Ireland to reach any patrol grids north of Britain. Its now Feb 1941, and from what I gather, shallow waters from now on are a definite killer for any Uboat crew!!!!

But, on the bright side, U94 survived to fight again another day!!!

Default Detection by destroyer at silent speed.

I have become convinced by experience that if a destroyer is nearby, you must reduce speed to even less than 'silent'. I use barely more than 2 kts. At this speed it seems that they can't hear you. I use this speed too when sneaking away from destroyers which are searching for me after I have attacked a convoy.
