worst patrol of my life!!!

it started off all so well, 3rd patrol of a so far very good career, we headed north around scapa flow, heading for our patrol square of bf11, when we stumbled across a task force. 2 battleships, escorted by 7 destroyers! we had no time at all to even get off a torpedo, the destroyers were over us like a rash, two of them tag teamed us, 1 listening while the other tried to blow us to oblivion.

in all the confusion, 1 of the battleships managed to collide with the other one, causing it to sink. we of course got no credit for this, but i guess its good for the war effort

we dived to the bottom of about 100 metres of water, when both of the destroyers started depth charging. we sustained a lot of damage, with our front compartments starting to flood. we managed to repair the damage, but our bow plains were damaged beyond repair.

we came back up, and were depth charged again, this time sustaining heavy flooding in the engine room. finally a stroke of luck, the destroyers left, probably thinking we were dead, and by rights we should have been. when they were well out of ranged we surfaced, and discovered the full extent of the damage. our radio antenna was destroyed, cutting off our link to BDU. our flak gun and deck gun were destroyed, and both our periscopes were also gone. our bow plains were still jammed, and with the shape our hull was in it was a miracle we were still afloat!

with all the damage, we had no real hope of a succesfull mission, so we headed back to port for repairs.

a hellish mission by all means, but u-48 pulled us through.

It may have been a bad patrol, but at least you made it back.

agreed.

i just got back from a long patrol during which i sank one passenger cargo ship. I sent a spread of two at her since they are known to resist damage. i missed aft! recalculated speed and sent another spread of two at her. hit her and sank her.

a few days later i tried to intercept a fast moving troop transport. she was easily turning out 15+ knots. i fired all of my deck gun on her from medium range as i was not catching her. she burst into flames and listed slightly to starboard but sailed on without losing speed.

i threw my arms in the air and went back to port

Glad you made it back herr Wolf, if we would be on the same Flotilla I'd share a beer with you in port. I'm currently on a 2 week leave, and it seems your U-48 isn't going anywhere either! At least not for the next month...

Good luck with the repairs and cheers from Flotilla 1!

You made it back, Wolf. That's what counts. And at 100 meters you were very, very lucky.

We got plenty of U-Boats to kick butt with but just a little low on soft toilet paper.
