I had just made it to my patrol area, when my radar man picked up a lone merchant. After setting up for a shot, and when she was close enough, I noticed that the ship had suffered damage. There was a small fire burning on the deck.
I sent a torpedo into her, just under the smokestack and no effect, other than the ship started zig-zagging. So, I came to the surface and started chasing her. I was able to send a spread, with another torpedo detonating in her aft. Still, the ship continued along, like it had a force field around her. No damage at all, no change in speed. Is this a small glitch that I should ignore or a corrupt save-game that I should abandon? Luckily, if it is, I just started this patrol. |

I, too have had this experience. I use TM, RSRDC and NSM4. Hitting the stern do not always sink the ship. In fact I thought it would have fragged the props. Sometimes the torp seems to go through the ship. So, what I did was speeded up the boat got to a 45-degree angle and set the torps to shallow running. Did the job.

Thanks, DJFL. I didn't so much expect to sink the ship, but to (at least) slow it down. It still chugged along, with no apparent (or visible) damage, whatsoever. And, I am still playing with stock, patched to 1.4.
Being afraid it was a corrupt save, I've decided to delete it and restart from a previous one. |

It's probably not the problem, but do you have your torpedos set for contact detonation only? If you use magnetic detonation and hit anywhere above the keel, the torpedo is liable to go off before it contacts the ship, thereby reducing the amount of damage done. Just a thought.

I play the stock game and have not had any torps which actually hit the ship fail to damage it. One way or another, I sink every ship I hit at least once.
Some people have mistakenly loaded up with and fired wake homing torps. Although they do have limited use, they have very small warheads and should not be a major part of your torp loadout. The heavy hitters are the 14s and 18s. Mark 10s are also a little wimpy which require twice as many hits as the 14 to sink. -Pv- |
