Default HSK Kormoran

Afternoon all

Just slightly off topic but very interesting news comming from Australia today that the HSK Kormoran the auxilary cruiser that sank HMAS Sydney with all hands has been discovered 150 kms west off Shark bay in Western Australia in position
26° 05' 49.4" S 111° 04' 27.5" E.

Check out the site www.findingsydney.com and hit the search diary icon and then the link for the page on the Kormoran, got some excellent sonar images of the wreck or what is left of it. The Kormoran as many of you are probably aware was carrying over 300 mines so when the scuttling charges went off so did the mines, there is a big debris field and then a large part of the front of the ship over 1000 metres away, also they think they found the battle site about 4 miles north of the wreck and there seems to be a very large peice of wreckage there apparently from either Sydney or Kormoran but probably Sydney as she was heavily shelled and torpedoed, one of the peices sticks out 11 metres above the sea floor so it is a very large peice of wreckage maybe a gun turret or something like that. Sydney has not been found as yet but I think they are pretty close to finding her now that they have found Kormoran.

HMAS Sydney was the largest ship in world war two that was lost with all hands and hardly a trace of her has ever been found.

Cheers
Andrew
