Call me stupid but how do I find out what my position is as a map reference or if I get a message telling me there is a convoy at a given position how do I find it on the charts?

Scroll out of the map, then the Sector names and numbers like BE38, AM25 etc appear -- the convoy should be marked as a grey icon in the corresponding sector

If the message gives you the position in co-ordinates such as 40.05N, 13.22E, then you can either ignore it or look in an atlas. I asked the same question and was told that even if you do go to that area there may well be nothing there, as a lot of messages are auomatically generated. I was also given a web-site that can convert co-ords to your AN** type grid reference. I will have a look for it.

Radio messages are just for game immersion. Check your navigation map for true convoy locations (when they are announced of course).

Map references like your patrol grid, or those immersion messages are arranged like the numbers on your phone's buttons. 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9 above one another in a 3x3 grid. If you get like BC36, the 6 means a similar subdivision of the 3-button. Historically they used 4 subdivision-levels like BE1234 to give precise coordinated. SH3 only uses 2 levels.
