Default GWX and Convoy Routes

Currently running GWX1.03. Looking forward to V2. I try to follow shipping lanes/convoy routes as laid out on the original SH3 map. Right now I'm in a IXC, July `41 following a single ship route, westerly, from the south of Ireland in quadrant BF to Sydney in quadrant BB. I'm about 1/2 way across the big pond but have yet to encounter a ship on this route. In fact, I never seem to encounter ships on any of the convoy routes on the original map. Am I just unlucky or does GWX not use the routes on the original map?

PS: Thank you to all concerned for your seemingly tireless effort with the development of GWX. Great job! Oh hell, thanks to all the modders that continue to improve this wonderful game.

Hi!

GWX does not specifically follow the routes on the map. I suggest you use your hydrophones often, as they have a much greater detection radius than your periscope and / or bridge watch.

Very true, this has helped me finding perfect hunting grounds.

No use in GWX2.0 because many of the waypoints are randomised

No worries Steel Tomb, mate, there's still plenty of bottlenecks they have to pass through, If you're willing to take the risk

Jimbuna, what do you mean with randomized?
BigBoyWooly told me in July this year about 2.0:

Convoy routes have not changed
Yes there are more merchants added as well as warships but convoy routes are untouched
They still run the same
Those routes are historical so no need to move them
(...)
singles are the same also
The only thing I have adjusted is tanker ally
They now have a more randomised route
Same basic area just not in a straight line

Umm, Jim probably worded that a bit unclearly, :hmm: you should probably PM BigBoyWooly about it for more details, rest assured that GWX 2.0 will not invalidate all previous work done on Spinnennetz, although some contact-clusters might prove to be slightly innacurate

Remember that GWX is in many ways about historical accuracy so there's not so much you can do about convoy lanes, that's where they sailed historically after all, it wouldn't make sense for westbound convoys to suddenly sail around Iceland and approach Britain from the north...

What it means is that in the random campaign layer
convoys are given multiple course waypoints to choose
from and a 50% probability or so of choosing either course
at many points along the way.

what this means is that when you get a contact
report of a convoy headed your way from say
200 nm out headed your way. you have to search
over sixty or seventy miles of ocean to find them
and they have an even chance of dodging you.

its really a good development in the campaign layers.
