Default manual tdc solution check

My manual TDC solutions have not been very sucessful lately, torpedoes are often passing behind the target, which I assume means the speed estimate is too low. I found it easier to check the solution accuracy in SHI than in SHIV for some reason. What is the preferred method of checking the accuracy of the solution? I am manually calculating speed by computing the distance travelled in a period of timie. I assume the white X on the attack map represents where the computer thinks the center of the target is, am I correct? Thanks! Joe S

I believe the X is the stern. Do not quote me on that! I do not use the attack map. Pretty much worthless without tools.

That's a good point about the attack map.

Can that be modded to include tools?

The white "X" is where the torpedo should impact.

Until I get SJ radar I always have difficulty estimating speed. I check my solution by checking where the white X is on the actual target after a few minutes. If it's still close you got a good solution. If it's out, you don't. I use firing angle to fudge minor discrepancies.

The white "tail" or pointer is the course of the target that you've input via AoB. You want this the same direction as the target itself.

The position keeper will tell you what bearing it thinks the target is on. If that bearing and the real bearing to target do not become different over time, then you know the solution is pretty accurate.

If you hold your mouse over the lower dial in the tdc a tool tip will pop up giving you the Pos Keepers bearing to target.

Another good way to check is the range. Take a range reading, then wait for awhile. The position keeper will count down the range as the target closes. If when you take another range reading the 2 numbers aren't close to each other, then you will know there is a problem.

As stated above, the X is where the torpedo will impact. The TDC has no notion of bow or stern, it just tracks a point moving through space.

Make sure you open your tubes before you fire. The torp will fire immediately instead of the delay you get when they are closed.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, if you have a perfect solution, then the white "x" will be positioned on the target and will remain on the target to and through when you launch your torpedoes?

Correct!

If, however, your solution is not good, the mark will stray and when you check it moments later it will no longer be on the target.

You're problem may not be your calculations. Go to the targeting fix mod and read what Capn Scurvy found. he also provided a fix for it.
