I am trailing behind a convoy awaiting darkness so I can pull up and use my last torpedo on a magnetic under-the-stern shot.
I have a Flower Class on either aft corner of the convoy. They take turns dashing out to the side for a sweep of the area. Then when the sweeper comes back the other goes out for his sweep. The convoy is 9 ships wide and the one I want is second in on the center column. I thought I would get 2km behind in the dark & wait for the one to go do his sweep & then I would dash in from behind & try my up-the-poopshoot shot. This is October 1940 and I was wondering just how much distance from the target I could get away with on a magnetic shot. The water is almost smooth. I have only used mag shots at 300-400m so far in the war even in bad weather, but I have had excellent success from that distance. I am not sure beyond 400m. This is most likely a dumb idea, but I have very little experience attacking convoys having just come out of lthe North Sea area... |

I find that after the battles in Norway the mag setting works pretty well. But even then it's a risk no matter the length of the shot.
I just hit some boats from 10,000m away with mag shots. Around Dec. 1940-Jan 1941. Maybe a 60-70% succsess rate on a handful of shots from that distance. (not very realistic, I know. So sue me. ![]() Being the last torp it's probably a good call for a mag shot. Better chance for a 1 hit kill. You just have to roll the dice though. If it detonates too soon it detonates too soon. Not much you can do. Just go back to port and get some more torps. They'll be plenty of ships left! Surprising you've had success shooting at 300-400m though. I usually want a little more distance for them to arm. |

.................... how much distance from the target I could get away with on a magnetic shot.........................
it'll work for how far the torpedo actully will go before it runs out of fuel or electric power ............... as long as its calm as you say you should be ok.... I would not go at flank speed or really anything over 1/3 as the flowers have pretty good ears ...... |

Interesting that you had such a long shot on mag. I thought they would blow up way before that from the past reads...
I have had some success in very lousy weather with great big ol waves & between 300-400m I was surprised when they actually went off under the ship... As far as speed, that has me a bit concerned. The Type IID will only go 8kts submerged at flank. The convoy is doing 7kts. I have been toying with the idea of just bagging it & starting for home & looking for a single freighter instead. I thought if I tagged along perhaps other subs would attack the convoy because Bdu did acknowledge my report. Then I could dash in while the flowers were off chasing others & get off my last shot... Lots of possibilities...hmmm... Decisions decisions...Oh, the weight of command is so heavy... |

Just because of the accuracy I would shoot at most from 1500m. :hmm:
Good luck with your last torp ![]()

In smooth water I've had success with a magnetic poop shot from a bit over 2,000 meter. Ithink luck played a role. :hmm:

hmmmmm...
The closer it gets to sunset (I can't believe I've done this at real time since 0800) the more I wonder if this is a wise thing to be doing. It's now 1700hours & the sun is just about to touch the horizon. Such a lovely night to die.. The Flower escorts take turns pulling out to the side and back around to the rear & then catch up with the convoy again, but I have noticed that at no time is there any gaps in coverage between their two ships. When you click on the ships it puts a dashed line around their craft to show the coverage.. It always is an overlap between them. They are positioned 1500m behind and 1500m to the side of each corner of the convoy. the distance between them is 9000m. The convoy is only 7 ships across.. I miscounted at first & thought it was 9 ships...my error... I am hoping for a destraction from another u-boat attack later on tonight. Have any of you ever seen that happen? |

With the sun coming up you may want to pull away and reaquire from in front. Enter submerged to the side of the lead escort. It's only '40, so a careful approach should get you in no problem. |

amazing sometimes how we can all be playing the same game and get different results regularly, with me it seems anything over 3000M on a magnetic setting is almost assured to go off prematurely.

I just shot two magnetic shots at a DD from around 1500m-2000m
First one got there and exploded under her hull. But there was no damage visable and got "Torpedo Missed" message. Shot another and it blew up about halfway there. ![]() But then strangely enough the ship went down from the first shot and I got credit for it. Just shows how devastating mag setting can be. Dispite all the malfunctions it's hard not to try it. |

I was thinking the same thing...lol...Same game, but vastly different results.
Just for grinns I used the "Super Cub" view and was looking at the different ships in the convoy when there sailing along, just as nice as you please, were the results of my third torpedo. A large merchant with fire just burning away through the top of his engine room compartment. heck, that blaze has been going on for eight hours now and the ship hasen't missed a beat or even slowed down. He should have dropped out of the pack long ago so I could finish the job & go home. |
