Default beginners issue on AI

So far I haven't spent enough time on SH3(GWX) to get the full potential out of the game; to be honest I play single mission games only (and change a few in the editor). So I have a long way to go you might think. I haven't yet read the GWX manual in detail I must confess.
Anyway, there are a few things in the AI I don't follow. First of all those destroyers always know where I am going and anticipate on every small move I make. Even if I am well below the surface and have the engines shut down they know where I am. How realistic is this? Perhaps more realistic than I imagine. With my realism settings set only around 55% it is already difficult to survive (I even don't work at night or in heavy fog)
When an enemy warship is about 11km away (single mission Scharnhorst e.g.) the ship can hardly be seen in those weather conditions but is fired at with great accuracy, even the destroyers with their small cannons fire at the ship. Doesn't seem very realistic to me. Scharnhorst is using its searchlights (looking for what?) which is not wise either I should think.
I would expect the big guns of the warships (and Bismarck especially) to have much more impact on a hit than currently is the case. When those projectiles hit the water I don't see much of an explosion either. I was just wondering, I realise this game is about submarine simulation not a combat between warships.

Actually the AI is quite good. I never played single missions. I found that Escorts find me mostly when I screw up something. If you haven't read GWX manual, try my website for practical advice on tactics for attack and evasion. But DO read the GWX manual, too.

single missions are usually harder than the campaign as its a challenge

Searchlights turn on when the ship detects an enemy

Dont forget when the Sharnhorst mission is set the warships have radar

Belfast had picked up Scharnhorst at 08:40 and 35,000 yards (32,000 m)
- so fire control is much better

1939 - River Plate

Exeter opened fire with her forward 8 inch turrets. Range 9,5 nautical miles.( 17.5 KM )

Even in 1941 the Bismark and Eugen opened fire on the Hood from a range of 11 miles ( 17.7 KM )

When Scharnhorst and Gneisenau sank HMS Glorious, The carrier force was visually spotted at 40 kilometres (21.6 nm), fire was opened at 26,000 metres (28,446 yards) and the longest hit ever recorded was at 24,175 metres (26.450 yards), all on June 8, 1940.
