Default New Guy looking for Clarification

A few questions from a SH3 n00b. Bear with me fellas.

First off, I’ve only been playing seriously for a couple of weeks. Now when I say “seriously” I’m no where close to where some of the members here are. I’m happy if my torps hit something when I do auto targeting. I’m just using the version I downloaded back in May. No mods as of yet. On to the questions.

First off, excuse my computer dumbness but how do I know if I installed patch 1.4b (I think that’s it). Apparently I downloaded it but have no idea if it’s installed. And what does it fix.

Secondly, in regards to crew promotions, are only the guys highlighted in blue eligible? For some of those clasps every darn guy is highlighted. (I think I need SH3 commander)

Lastly (for now) I’m confused about the way the game saves. When I save in a patrol and exit the game it shows as the save I named and then “in base after patrol” and “in base before patrol” Why does it do that?

Thanks in advance and thanks to all the helpful posts and links that I’ve read over the past few days. I was definitely on SH3 information overload Wednesday and Thursday. I’m sure I’ll have more questions as I get farther along.

Fixes loads! To tell whether the 1.4b patch is installed, load the game and look in the bottom right corner of the main SH3 menu. It will say 1.4

Choose 'Save & exit'. The last save will always put you in base but choose to load the one before which says 'In Mission'. The game thinks you want to return to base so it creates that save point as default.

Welcome to Subsim and sink em all.

Thanks for the quick response. Back to the saves real quick. I finished my first patrol last night and saved right before I got the option to return to Kiel. Does the game auto save when you choose the return to port option? I think I messed up and and shut the game down after I returned to base and handed out awards so I may have to reload my last few km's and do that part over.

IIRC, you have two "saves" when in port. When you first return, the game makes a save "after mission" or "after patrol X". Then when you make changes, such as upgrading your U-boat, giving awards, etc., it makes another save "before mission" or "before patrol X+1". You don't need to worry about a manual save unless you're actually on a patrol / out of the office.

Just to add to whats been said so far ...... save a few times during a patrol ... be on the surface and at normal speed ... make a save ( be sure to hit the enter key after typing what to call it ) and then click the save word .............. I generally save about 3 to 4 times during a patrol .... I name them like " got two " ... " convoy " .... " iamborded " .... " homeward " ..............

When you load up the game again you'll see the saves you named and can start from there if you so desire ( but you lose anything afterward ) .......

Reason I always save ... its a bummer to have an almost perfect patrol and I am so proud of my crew .... then the power company decides its time to work on the power lines and cuts it off
