Default GWX Convoy Formation.

Hi All,

Been having an absolute blast in SH3/GWX.

Just wondered, is there 'a typical' convoy formation pattern (e.g. Diamomd shape, Column etc..) used in the Sim when Escorts and DD's are present?

The only convoys I've met have been in column formation - often with the more valuable targets such as tankers in the centre column(s). There always seems to be one escort on point, zig-zagging to avoid presenting too easy a target and to maintain greater speed than the bulk of the convoy. ( all the better to come a-charging at your position, my dear.)

Other escorts tend to deploy on the flanks ( 1, or 2 each side depending on how many) and there's often a "sweeper" bringing up the rear.

On a few occasions a larger warship has been part of a convoy ( Dido Class cruiser etc). They tend to take up as central a position within the convoy as possible - I presume to protect themselves and to be able to use their big guns and greater AA capability to cover all the convoy.

Convoys are great to stalk and attack, but one slip and you're toast.

Sometimes you also get lucky and a convoy has no front escort makeing it easy to get inside.

Enjoy it while you can. Towards the end of the war the escorts are as many as the merchant ships

On what planet is that? :hmm: Or is that what you get when on eternal patrol? :rotfl:

I consider myself lucky if the lead escort is an older escort, so I can slip in unnoticed. This is becoming rarer as time goes on (late 43). The black swans have caused me many sleepless nights (bad dreams). I'm not looking forward to 1944 onward.

Im serious I did run into a convoy who had side and a rear escort but no front one I got in sunk a tanker and a Cargo and then somehow escaped with no depth charges dropped on me guess they dident detect me.

43 onwards.....radar, elite crews, hedgehog, improved air cover, rocket firing planes, you'll have a whale of a time
