Default everything "Mark"??

there is something that keeps bothering me: why the americans named almost each weapon "Mark"? there are tanks Mark, grenades Mark, torpedoes Mark... It is pretty confusing. Would not it be simplier to have tanks Mark, grenades Peter, torpedoes Jack etc??:hmm:

From the dictionary.com definition:

12.(usually initial capital letter) U.S. Military. a designation for an item of military equipment in production, used in combination with a numeral to indicate the order of adoption, and often abbreviated: a Mark-4 tank; an M-1 rifle.

Simply put, "mark" has the same definition as "type" or "version"

Don't forget Big Bertha! She was short but packed a punch.

We name our guns, too. The U.S. Army had a 155mm gun called "Long Tom".

"Mark" is just another word for "variation" or "version." That there is also a person's name "Mark" is coincidence.
