Patrol mission question

Hi
I am in a career mod. Sitting on the star that indicates the patrol area. (Luzon Straits) the mission was to patrol the Straits. Question I have is how long do I have to patrol to get the log to indicate mission complete? On the insertion missions as soon as I dropped off the squad the log said mission complete. There must be a time requirement for a patrol???
As you can see I’m pretty green at this LOL!
