Invasion of Valletta! - Pic Heavy

Hi all, well I had to do it, sneak into Valletta & try to earn some renown! As I approached the island I was met with a small task force of 2 frigates, 2 destroyers & a corvette. Running silent at periscope depth I closed in on their Starboard side perfect for a quick 90 shot, and as luck would have it the last ship was a frigate, I calculated speed using 3 minute timer, manually set TDC for 360-20, distance 1.8k meters, I had a full load of fish & thought I'd send 3! One hit near the stern & down she went!

Just after I fired the torpedo's I dived to 120 meters & changed course 45 degrees to port away from the scene, we were all breathing heavy as a destroyer closed to around 600 meters then circled for a while & left, after about 30 minutes had past it was safe to surface & continue on our way.
Not knowing where mines or nets would be I plotted a course straight down the middle!

Then A visual sighting of a destroyer forced me to take her down to periscope depth, running silent, Hydraphone operator confirmed heavy DD trafic, on approach I put scope up just enough to break the surface for a second & check things out, then lowered scope again.

Getting close to the port & sea depth is now only around 20 meters.

Now I'm inside & there are 3 destroyers anchored next to each other I figured I would take these out or on my departure they may be active & waiting for me, closed to a good position I sent a torpedo to each, that's all it took!

Contact reports confirmed large moored ships further in:

so I proceed, depth 12 meters with only a few to spare:

Once in I get a report of depth charges & things get a little tense, however it turned out to be the Luftwaffe attacking a troop transport, one of my targets, lucky for me it was only lightly damaged but unfortunately for the pilot a destroyer shot him down, splashed down about 200 meters away, a little too close, and Johan soiled his pants, this made things even more uncomfortable!
To my port side I passed a Troop transport as I closed in on the damaged Replentishment ship, one shot from one of my stern tubes finished the job:

Then the other stern torpedo sent the troop transport down:

Time to leave:

I plotted a course out and as there were a few DD's on my port side I decided to exit a different way heading south once out of port, however I recieved minor damage to the bow planes as I ran into a net:

Then changed course & went out the way I came in, passed the net then carried on a course due south toward my patrol area!
Quite surprised that I never got pinged once, probably just lucky!
The End.

Hey Reece,

Superb journal you have here indeed!

I just followed your screenshots as if i am watching a movie... just if i had a popcorn to complete the ambience!!! (The Boss would have DC'd me for sure!)

For that sea effect, which file i need to download from your site? There lots of options and i seek for a GWX version?

Before I do that I had better do a report on the shell splashes for MM, the outcome may put you off!
I did some tests MM & noticed that when the shells hit the water a plume shoots up lingering for around 15 seconds (from start to end), I assume this is normal:

Could you elaborate on this, the shot you posted before, or the problem you have does the above effect just stay there forever or something?
Edit:
For those who are scratching their heads, the problem MM is referring to is in the particles.dat file that is part of the smoke effect by urfisch ... maybe.

ive observed it a few times but was testing other stuff so I havent
tested it in detail,

I suspect that if you approach the lingering burst with free cam it disolves
why that would be I couldnt say, its just an early impression I havent been
able to test yet.

some seem to last fifteenish seconds others appear to linger longer
but again this isnt a study just passing observations and may not
be correct.

it was part of the smoke mod not part of the ships funnel smoke mod
and you would have inherited it from there

there was a comment about it on that thread.
M

[edit] For the Uber player it has the advantage of checking shot placement at range.

other than this little bugaboo its a great mod the smoke looks awesome.

Hi Reece, awesome pics

Are you using your modified SH4 scene.dat to get the water looking like that?

Cheers

@ johnno74, Yes together with GWX EnvColors & this water is in the Mediterranean, SHIII has different water for Arctic, Atlantic & Mediterranean!
So far it seems all bugs/problems are solved in the SHIV Scene.dat file, the only draw back is that it's only the 8k version (that fine to me anyway), certainly makes for colorfull scenes!
@ MM, I will check with stock, I wonder if I export the smoke details from Urfisch' Particles into stock, worth a try!
Cheers.
Edit: Well after checking, it would take many hours to reverse engineer! I'll let it go!
I sent a PM to Urfisch for some help/advise.
For those who want Sobers smoke without the particles file:
