Default Stock career recommendations?

I am starting out with my first careers with the stock game.

I was curious what are the most interesting time periods and particulars for starting a career?

I just did one patrol starting in '39, but it was a long cruise out to the Atlantic and there is nothing but line merchants. Not really thrilling by any strech.

Recommendations for a better period to pick? Or recommendations how to make 39/40 thrilling on my own? (like try to camp out on some British harbors or head into the shallows for hunting)

Thanks.

The med after North Africa falls. A bit different than the North Atlantic convoy routes.

39-40 are best so you can train your crew, which you will need when things get rough.

Go to the Gulf of Cadiz, lots of merchies and difficult convoys and lots of aircraft.

Good hunting

Get up north of Norway in 1940. There is a bit of warship action to be had up there with stock SHIII IIRC.

I'd recommend staring off with a Type II U-boat out of Wilhelmshaven. Getting used to the smaller Type II will let you appreciate the larger Type VII and IX later on. Also, avoid Kiel...sailing around Denmark can get tiresome. :-)
