Default Im I brave or just stupid?

i just took on a destroyer escort on the surfuce with my deck gun....and won

he spotted me when i was makin my move to attack a convoy as it was getting dark and after a long pursuit, i was getting tired of running like a scared little school girl so i said screw it and remembered the old saying "no guts, no glory"

as i turned U-122 and charged right into the escort, 10km 8km 6km...., i began to wonder "what the hell am i doing?"

but my aim was true and from 10km out, i began to pummel the tommy with high velocity death from my deck gun

when i got within 3 km, he was already a burning wreak and it only took 4 or 5 more shells to finish off his sorry excuse of a ship.

so this begs the question, im a brave or just stupid?

and also, could this ever happen in real life (i highly doubt it)

You're lucky.

Don't expect to be able to do that very often.

Very impressive. Was that using vanilla SH3?

yeah... what version of SH3?

unless you hit the sweet spot on the destroyer you might as well have been throwing tennis balls at high velocity at that destroyer or perhaps screaming foul language at him about his mother would have been equally as effective.

I ran across a flower corvette escorting a couple of tankers and we had it out... he launched several failed depth charge attacks on me but i eventually figured out that he would pass over me in a DC run and not drop any turds on my head. he was out of DCs!

during his last pass i went to flank speed and surfaced as he passed me overhead and tore him apart with the deck gun. I managed to at least disarm him by blasting his weapons off. but not before he got a couple of shots off and seriously damaged my boat.

The later in the war you attempt such acts of heroism your likely to find yourself turned into a war grave.

didnt this guy have any friends with him?

on a side note...

i do recall sinking a battleship with the deck gun in vanilla SH3.

hit him with my last two torpedos. his friends tried to kill me for a few minutes than ran away... this BB was listing hard to port so i pulled up at near point blank range on his starboard side and started shooting him in the belly with the deck gun... he turned every gun on that ship against me but couldnt aim down enough to hit me! after using up almost every AP round and HE round i had... he slipped under :rotfl:

if i was the captain of that BB i would have gone down with the ship... imagine the rescue operation and the debriefing

debriefer "So captain what happened?"

BB captain "well we got sunk by a u-boat."

debriefer "ahh yes those little buggers are hell with those torpedos."

BB captain "Well we only took 2 torepedos... he finished us off with his deck gun."

debriefer "im sorry i think i had something in my ear mate.... could you repeat that?"

BB captain

Man, You are one lucky Son of a Gun.
There is no way in Hades that you would have gotten away with that in the real world. You needed the best of all deck gunners and it still ain't gonna happen. That DD would build up steam, crank on the speed, turn on a dime, and start shootin'. And if that didn't finish you, the Skipper would have rammed your arse.............

You won't be doing that in GWX! If you use SH3Commander fix your DG rate of fire to something approaching reality and see how you go.

I smacked a DE just outside Tobruk using GWX a few nights ago. He'd gottent tagled in the subnet and couldn't manouver to bring her froward guns to bear. Kept astern and gave him as small a target as I could while we aimed for her stern gun. After about 18 shots finally disarmed her from the rear and then just sat 2km off until she went down.

By way of experimentation I tried this in GWX the other night. Even though I got the DD burning like Guy Fawkes, he eventually knocked off my gun crew and within seconds after that, perforated my hull so badly that I got the Abandon Career screen. So I don't think I'll be doing that again when it really matters. I can't imagine many real Kaleuns doing it either.

Now an armed trawler maybe, as long as I've got a good early bead on it...

Highly unlikely scenario if using GWX :hmm:

if you play at 100% realism yeah.
otherwise you might have a litle chance (if you also use torpedo's)

"so this begs the question, im a brave or just stupid?"

Short answer; Yes, and you got lucky.

But as long as your having fun, then it sounds like another cool SH3 event!

im using GWX, 100% realism, and i guess i did just hit it in the sweet spot, but the majority of the fight was from long distance and i was heading at him straight on, thus making me a really small target from far out

hey, and a little luck never hurts lol
