Default Highly Decorated U-boat Officer Retires

(... well my Kaleun i have been playing as for quite some time on high difficulty settings has anyhow)

Oberleutnant z. S. Jon W. Wintergarten retired on Tuesday September 28th 1943 after 26 patrols with the U-Boat service.

He joined the Kriegsmarine on the 9th of December 1934 as a Seekadett and climbed through the ranks entering commander training on in March 1938. Upon completion of commanders training he took command of U-48 briefly in September of 1939 completing 8 patrols during which he was credited with sinking 106,306 tons of enemy merchant shipping. "Tonnage was easier to come by during the early stages of the war." he said "the Kriegsmarine U-boat flotillas has more or less closed down the East Coast of Great Britian."

In July of 1940 Jon Wintergarten temporarily took command of U-88 for 2 patrols claiming an additional 12643 tons of enemy shipping. During his first patrol with U-88, an air attack severely damaged the boat claiming the lives of four sailors.

Shortly thereafter he transferred to the French bases and briefly assumed command of U-100 and then later in 1941 U-572.

He is credited with sinking a total of 409,899 tons... 62,098 of which came from sinking warships... including a 36,000 ton Nelson Class Battleship.

---------------

After his duty at the front, Jon Wintergarten became a commander in the KdK (Kommando der Kleinkampfverbände, Command of Midget Battle Units), where he was responsible for the midget U-boats (Seehund, Biber) until the end of the war. In 1956 Jon Wintergarten joined the Bundesmarine, holding mainly staff positions but also commanding the frigate Hipper for a few months. He retired in 1972. He died on 29 April 1982.
