German Cross is now but a memory

My most successful career to date is over. U-46 and her fabulously decorated captain are gone, consigned to my memory and leaving behind only regrets and what ifs. In or around May 1941 this gallant boat had an ignoble end, not at the hands of the enemy but as a result of human error (the human in question being me)

After a succession of absolutely crap careers this boat under Kaleun Arthur Wissler set sail in Sep 1939 from Willi on what was to become a 12 patrol record. Her final tonnage is not known but on her last four patrols she dispatched 190,000 of vital war supplies to the bottom. We never returned to base with less than 20,0000 on any patrol. Her finest moment came on patrol #11 when she found an inbound convoy south of Ireland whilst on her way to patrol Grid AL64. In a series of devastating attacks carried out over a 24 hour period U-46 sank 83,000 tonnes of shipping including 2 large tankers and 3 large merchants. The hapless escorts DC'd for hours but didn't even scratch the paintwork!

This action added to my previous award of Knights Cross with all the trimmings secured for me the German Cross and medals for many of the crew (I dont award medals through SHCommander. If BdU sees fit to hand them out I pass them down) The combined weight of all the crews decorations was such that we would shift it forward during crash dives to aid our descent!

U-46's last completed patrol netted close on 50,000 tonnes although bad weather in the North Atlantic meant that targets were hard to locate and our fuel gave up before our torp supply. The future was looking bright and being an intelligent kind of Kaleun I sensed war with the US was on the horizon. What damage could this experienced crew do against the tankers off the american east coast? I was even considering a change to a type IX and cashing in a bit of renown to pimp her up.

Then disaster! During a routine mod install something went wrong. I downloaded and enabled a mod with JSGME and set sail. I didnt like the change it made to my gameplay so I decided to exit, rollback SHCommander and disable the mod. But it appeared to have overwritten something in GWX. The change seemed permanent. No prob disabling independant mods but when I tried to disable all mods to see if that helped the GWX mods that came with 1.03 were left. It kept telling to disable the latest mod before disabling them. I tried deleting every mention of the mod in every folder on the pc but it hung in there! Now I'm not a computer person and I'm sure if I had spent time asking here I might have got it sorted but being an impatient git and with heavy heart I decided on a complete uninstall.

So here I am again at the beginning but on the bright side I have a s***load of experience now

I feel your pain mate.

I've just had problems with a browser hijacker/virus(I'd love to meet one of the gits that put these things on the net,and shake them warmly by the throat) Got rid of it, did a system restore and now SHIII crashes every time I try to use it. I'd deleted the original GWX files so I'm in the process of downloading it all again. Then I'll have to uninstall, reinstall Blah, Blah,Blah.

Goes without saying I've lost my career yet again.

Ah well, such is life eh?

Same here guys. As I swiched to GWX 1.03 mixing incompatible splendid career, which messed up the graphic drivers, and gone through 4 days of battling computer and having withdrawal pains -- Now back at the beginning, 1939. But now I can sit on my bunk and listen to J'atendre and feel sad.

Sank 3 small freighter on my transit from Wili to the Belle Isle passage while enroute to SW of Ireland. The new voices in 1,03 add to the feel of having new crew.

Good luck, Kameraden and good hunting
