Default Homing Torperdos and DDs?

Greetings all.

Some Type V (I believe that is the number, pardon me if I am wrong... at lunch at work right now so I can't check) torpedos have become available to me at the end of 1943.

I'm using the Real U-boat mod.

Anyone ever have any luck with the use of homing torpedos on a pursuing DD? What range is good for firing? I'm experimenting with aft tubes only right now.

What's your technique?

I'm going with magnetic setting of a depth around 6 meters. Too deep? I'm not going to try an impact shot.

I don't think you want to go more than 2 meters below the keel, so your setting for DDs should be 5 meters

Greeting to you.

I use them all of the time in the aft tubes. I wait until the DD gets to around 1000 meters make sure I am at a good gyro angle then fire. I make sure I keep going straight ahead and then dive to 25 meters. These things have a habit of comming back and bitting you in the ass. make sure you keep going at a head full so the DD does not loose you. Set for draft under keel, I set to 1 meter under the draft of what ever DD is chasing me. They never see it comming. Hope this helps.

Regards

Chuck

Be advised: they only travel at 20 or 24kts (depending on which version you have) and must travel 400 metres before they 'arm'

Be careful too as they lock on the loudest sound.... that can be you if you're not careful.

Those homing torpedos r great, espcialy if your firing at anything smaller then a DD.

The problem with firing them at a DD is that they often hit around the engines which often doenst cause the ship to sink right away.

If a ship is comming right at you fire the torpedo when ur lined up with the ship. This causes the torpedo to go under the ship and explode underneath it causing it to sink very fast.
If the ship is zigg zagging or comming in at an angle ur likely to hit the ship near the engine compartment.

Another problem with these torpedos is that they head toward the loudest sound, so if ur firing into a convoy and u aim at a certain ship u have a 50/50 chance of a hit unless the ship is allone.

I also noticed that these torpedos dont always work, you fire them at a target but instead of heading toward the ship it continues going straight. Also to take out all other noises, shut off your engines.

Worked like a charm. I had a beam crossing destroyer escort that had been vectored into the area from a spotting aircraft. I decided to try something interesting. I lead the Destroyer like a duck on the fly by a bit and let loose.

I then hit flank and dove to 50 meters just to see what the torp did.

You don't get a an action camera with the Real U-boat mod so tracking the torpedo has to be done manually by manipulating the external view. I followed the T-V. For a while I thought that it would be a bust but it started zig zagging sniffing around. At 5 meters depth it sure enough started turning toward the DD. It hit him square in the rudder immobilizing him for the easy kill with a T-II. Boom. Easy.

Too bad I only have one per patrol but it levels the playing field.

Wow.

Time to upgrade! That's like saying:

I'm using a 8086 with a herculues graphics adaptor,a full 640K ram, 20 MB hard drive, and it even has a turbo switch.

Take your pick:

I guess I'm using an ancient Mod? Yeah probably but I didn't want to start out Grey Wolves without getting all the way through the game once. Then, of course, system got hit by lightning and that nuked a my hard drive. Surge protectors are not as good as they make them out to be. I had to start all over again.
