The enemy AI will use morse code by means of search light, which probably means friendlies will, too. It's in the Hands-on report

Unless you're operating in a fleet, how often do you think you'll be around a friendly and have something to say that close? I've no problem with the concept of it being there. But it sounds like an option that won't get much use, at least for sending stuff ourselves. Be delighted to be proven otherwise though

I think it would be a great feature for gorilla missions (ie landing/supplying/recovering coast watchers etc). I've read of at least one instance where proper recognition signals were used only to have the recovery team from a sub met by Japanese. It'd also be a interesting frature for MP if you were only allowed to communicate with morse and within visual range...

Fair point. That's probably the only circumstances it could be used, but at least in those ones it would be a central part of the process as opposed to a cute extra.
