Default How did I manage that?

Hello.

Just recently started to dip my foot in the water with SH III and the Grey Wolves Mod. I've stumbled across an amusing yet wholly bizzare sitution in the career game after leaving Lorient Port.

As most of you likely know, when departing Lorient you come to an island near the mouth of the bay. Based on my next patrol grid, I took a different approach around the island and went right (that's the U-boats right on a south couse) instead of the previous left.
Well, doing this I quickly managed pummel the boat on the sea bottom in what, unknowningly, turned out to be very shallow water. I was able to stop the boat in time to save it from complete annihilation and I subsequently returned to port with the hull integrity down to 52 and 2 of the bow tubes utterly destroyed. For this rather confounded mishap I was award the Iron Cross, Second Class -- making it The most generously rewarded misadventure that I've ever seen.

I don't think this really has anything to with the GW expansion but rather a short sighted calculation by the SH developers - perhaps by simply figuring that my return to base with a broken boat, I've managed to gallantly bring it and the crew back from a daunting battle.

I think this is one of those twisted misfortunes which I have no intention on blaming on Bernard, as you say.

Has anyone else experienced this or what do you think has happened?

I'd rather suppose it was a antisubmarine subnet or a mine field.

Have a look when at map view at a sheet (left top corner) that shows you subnets and mine fields around German harbours. That's going to explain a lot to you.

And welcome to Forums!

I see. I'll have to check that in a bit, then.

Still, it does seem to be quite a weighty decoration for not only mashing up my boat but also one of the carefully placed net/mines - if that's the the case.

Thanks for the welcome.

You most likely had earned enough renown in previous patrols to merit the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Since SH3 doesn't give out medals in bunches like that (i.e. you can't get the Iron Cross and a Ritterkreuz in the same patrol) you get the next medal in line after your next patrol.

Then it would seem, in part, that my ignorance of the reward system would explicate that.

It also seems somewhat easier to attain rewards than I had previously thought. Since this was only my 3rd patrol and I'd barely got out the port. My 2nd patrol consisted of sinking 1 large cargo and my 1st resulted in returning to port with a full load of fish and no kills/hits at all. I suppose then it's enough to actually survive a patrol and being able to run subsequent patrols irrespective of the outcome.

Is this a bug, I have left port, almost immendiately returned ( testing a new mod, that kind of thing ) and have earned medals:hmm:

if you are really near the prestige level of your next medal then if the amount
is smaller than the dock at port prestige reward this will happen.

To be honest I'm a little suprised at what your describing because turning 'right' is the safest channel/route Turn 'left' and you hit a minefield :hmm:

Welcome aboard, Brigand,
Some odd things do happen in SHIII & GWX. Without intent, they duplicate some ridiculous vagaries of military life. When you get a medal for visiting Madame Framboise's bordello, salute and grab the gong. Check out the minefield chart tucked into the top left corner of the nav screen. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Concerning leaving port: To be safe, just follow your escort ship out.

Indeed. In the rather eccentric world of the Kriegsmarine, Lord knows what they decorate me with next if I laterly contracted syphilis and passed it on to the Kommodores daughter.

They'd decorate you with a free pass to the front lines of Stalingrad for an extra special chance for you to show your love for the Fatherland by undertaking a suicide mission.
