iirc, they were testing an explosive device, and did not realize that immediately below was a sunken ammo barge still containing tons of munitions. The black spume was from the sunken vessel exploding.

Interesting :hmm: ... didn't think explosions could work like that in water... I mean, all that dust and smoke? how can there be dust coming from water? shouldn't all those particles come out wet and hence to heavy to float in the air?... well, aparently not... curioser and curioser :hmm:

I think basically the explosion blew a big hole in the water (air).

As I already stated above, the black 'smoke' was from sympathetically detonating a sunken ammo carrier that they weren't aware was there. The original charge then detonated the old, sunken munitions, which appears to have thrown up a lot of mud, muck and silt as they exploded on the sea floor.
