Many of the passenger liners were converted during the war to troop transports, these were certainly armed.

I really would not like to be the rear gunner on that thing!

Fire one round & that platform would have to snap off.

It took me 2 fish stop her in her tracks and about 20 rounds of HE shells I did fire a 3rd fish at her but missed at hit a cruiser which I did not know that was there.

Has no one else ever come under fire from a de-fanged convoy?

I have. After sinking the lone escort with a VIIb in early 1940, I surfaced behind the convoy. Weather was absolutely outstanding; 0m/s wind, light fog, partially overcast, very early in the night.

I was nearly abrest with one of the ships at the far back of the convoy, and started firing. I was really looking to make some engine-room hits at the waterline and bring some boats to a complete halt, then run some perfect shots underneath them.

Came under fire. Hydrophones were completely clear of warships, and I used the external camera to check around to see what the hell was firing at me. It was either an invisible 2nd escort, or an armed merchant in the convoy.

Since then, I've learned my lesson. And judging from the screenshot of that passenger liner, attacking from directly astern wouldn't work, either. It's cases like that where the "neutral" status of a boat is......a little vague. :hmm:

Yup. I saw a pair of t3 tanker just cruising along and there were no escorts. They were moving quick, though, about 10 knots if I recall, and after I'd used up the last of my eels (I was returning home when they were spotted), I'd disabled one and the other was listing and mostly destroyed. I waited a bit and when the listing T3 began to capsize, I surfaced to use the deck gun on the remaining ship. Wouldn't you know it; it was armed and apparently had trained gunners. I had to back off to about 2000m and shoot from there or else I would have taken too much damage. I never did see the luftwaffe attack this boat and I couldn't sink it either.

Don't be so quick to judge! I've been "attacked" by friendly ships too. Those damnable skimmer captains out in their type 34s think they own the ocean and constantly try to ram me north of Kiel. One not only passed in front of me while I was stopped, but then it had to reverse, turn and try to hit me again! Coming in to port and leaving port is even more dangerous and a tramp steamer tried to ram me there. After running Willy, my engine officer, haggard, I threw some AA rounds at the hull of that steamer. It turned on it's light and watched me. Nice to know it takes shooting at people to get their attention! At least the Type II sub kaleuns are smart enough to steer in a manner that doesn't make me take evasives.

In my more gallant days I actually surfaced behind a damaged troop transport, inside it's aft gun range, took out the rear gun with AP, then proceeded to shell the ship until it sank. The forward gun couldn't get a solution.

Of course, that was before the DG changes in RuB and the NYGM TM damage model...
