RIP Chuck Yeager ((( True legend of world aviation.
He's in eternal flight now. His figure is very much like our Stepan Mikoyan - also WWII vet and a famous test pilot, who helped to bring to sky nearly everything that had wings and an engine. So they can share heaven just like they shared the skies.

There never was a finer example of " The Greatest Generation." Chuck's contributions with regards to military and commercial aviation is incalculable. Chuck shot down 13 German aircraft in WW2, 5 in one mission to earn ace status.
Chuck was also the first to fly past the sound barrier in the X1. Quote : Yeager was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. President Harry S. Truman awarded him the Collier air trophy in December 1948 for his breaking the sound barrier. He also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chuck-y...ied-at-age-97/ ^ Btw, Dmitry Markov. Very nice write up and send off. ![]() Rest in peace Chuck and btw, thanks for everything. ![]() |

Quite a remarkable man may he rest in peace. I remember seeing him hanging out with Bob Hoover at the Reno air races by a motorhome, or trailer. That was in the early eighties and and I'd snuck onto the tarmac with a friend after dark to snoop around. We were staying at the air field in a motorhome and just walked in. We didn't have the courage to try and talk to him.

I think I have the dates right, he was also Robin Old's CO in the 555th FS during the Vietnam war.

rest in peace!
p.s. - For anyone who has not read it, Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff" is the best book on the early space program and Yeager's role in it. The movie covers maybe 5% of the stuff in the book and mostly superficially.

Heck, I did not even kn pow he was still around. Its difficult to have lived through he PC game world of the past 35 years and not having stumbled over his name. Not to mention its echo in real world and history.
