Escorts After AI UBoat?

Was on a patrol recently (TWoS - Happy Times) and had worked around to front of convoy on their port side and was working in good at periscope depth. Suddenly near corvette on my side throttles-up and looks like she's headed for me! Before I head for the cellar I scope around and see the point DD and another escort on the starboard side going all out for the other side of the convoy and I look back at the corvette and I see her starboard AOB opening up. I lower the scope and sound indicates that she's going to pass ahead of me: as soon as she clears I up scope and see the corvette heading as fast as it can towards where the other two escorts are starting to drop DCs and apparently working over a contact. They spent 10 minutes and 15-20 DCs over there before heading back to position: just as my torpedoes start impacting!


So question - does the game generate random submerged AI UBoats that can prosecute a convoy or is this scripted antisub activity wherein escorts respond as if there is a contact to give the game some flavor but the game doesn't have an AI sub out there?

Short answer - yes. AI Uboats aren't that smart unfortunately but they can be very useful as a decoy for enemy escorts. When you send contact report there is a random chance that the game will spawn 1 to several friendly Uboats in your area depending of war period, location ect. BdU will inform you if this is the case...

I remember SH3 would spawn AI Uboats but they could only run on the surface and would attack with their gun. Couple times in SH3 I found a convoy visually because the Uboat was being worked over and on fire.

In SH5(TWoS/IRAI) they can actually dive and attack the targets, if they see them of course which often isn't the case during the night...
