Default Batteries, shafts, and eng

Hello everyone I am new to the forums. I have a couple of questions I would like to ask, if you could please answer them or point me to the post where they could be answered it would be greatly appreciated. I've looked to no avail.

I'm running SH 5 1.2 with Wolves of steel 1.02, WoS Patch 1.02 p5.

What are the purposes for the shafts in the UI? When or how would I use them?

There is also an electric engine only option what application would I use that in the surface?

Thanks in advance.

Good Day Mr. Scurvy.

I am kind of new here too, welcome aboard.I believe the two shafts are available for added realism and manuverability.I'd say if you wanted to turn faster you could just use the one screw.Or if one happpens to get damaged.

Maybe popping up in a harbor or close to a bunch of enemy you could use the electric only engines to keep the noise down.

Just my thoughts,maybe other reasons.

You've got access to the shafts so that you can maneuver and navigate if your rudder is destroyed; it's possible to run just one shaft in order to turn and change course. It's slow-going, but could be the difference between being adrift and making it home.

Not sure about the batteries; it may serve a similar purpose to the shafts, in that if your diesel engines are knocked out you could run electric in order to make a quick getaway. I don't know if there's a difference in the noise, I always assumed that escorts picked up on the cavitation of your screws and not necessarily your engine noise...not confirmed, just a hunch.
