Default Ordered to DH55

As the title says, just transferred to wills because I got fed up with kiel, dont have enough renown so Im still in my type II. First mission is to patrol DH55 which is past madeira, distance is 4500 kms give or take and thats via the english channel, not really do-able I think.
Will I continue to get long range missions from wills?

Probably. You changed Flottila's, but not the uboat type. I think destinations are chosen based on the Flottila and time you are in.

Depending on the year (and mod) there may be a (covert) supply ship in Spain where you can fill up the tanks. Best is to really pay attention to your fuel mileage. The Channel might be asking for more trouble than an empty tank. Likely it is going to get punctured by sharp pointy objects. Going around Scottland might still be possible if you can refuel. I just don't know the distance of the top of my head.

But you don't really have to adhere to that given patrol grid anyway. The game won't punnish you for not doing this. It's up to you if you want to play uber-hardcore on following orders. The game if forcing you into unlikely situations, so no problem if you don't.

Hello bertieck476

The file is ...data/Cfg/Flotilla.cfg
It can be opened and changed with notepad.
The file is organised by flotilla and then by submarine version.

More fun to do it the way Pisces suggested IMO.

If you sink e.g. HMS Nelson, none will complain about not reaching your grid.

Thanks for the replies folks, I have set off for my patrol sector and I have plotted a course via the channel just to see how it goes, it is still early in the war for me (feb 40) so maybe I'll get through and maybe something (good) will happen so I dont have to go all the way to DH55.
I am using GWX and I can see marked on the chart the Corrientes off Las Palmas, is this the milk cow and do I just go alongside it?

Corrientes is a supply ship with lots of oil barrels stacked up on deck and everything else you might need stored below. I dock alongside but the game allows you to do this automatically if you exit your patrol when you are in the vicinity (I think you need to be closer than 20 Kilometres) you will see an on screen option that says "Dock at Corrientes?".

The English Channel isn't so difficult in the game during the early war years provided you make a dash by night or in poor visibility on the surface and very close to the French Coast. In real life mines were the biggest danger at this time but these do not seem to be a threat in the game. Having said that it is safer and likely more rewarding taking the favoured route around Scotland and west of Ireland - you can make the journey at a fuel efficient speed and will probably have an opportunity to sink a few merchants on the way . . .

I never used a IIA so I don't know the max range. Just let me ask, did you use a economic speed (for VIIB it is 8 knots, you can achieve max 36 k -40 k km with 8 knots)

Im only a few hours out of wills, Im running at 5kts and this has extended my range approx 4k (max range 14k). Im going to run the channel just for the hell of it ( been round scotland many times) IIRC gwx does include mines so I may have to gen up on there positions, I seem to remember a chart showing known minefields but not sure where I came across it.

Yes you are correct. GWX includes minefields in Der Kanal. If your fuel permits you may try to run fast and surfaced only in the nights. If you must travel in daylight as well, try to make hydrophone checks personally and every 1 hour.

You might just be early enough for those minefields. But I would be very cautious on the return trip. Try to time your passage through the entire Canal, not just Dover/Calais, during the night. If you must. Be carefull when diving.

Iirc the economical speed for a type 2 was around 6 or 7 knots, less than 8 for the type-7. but it's been more than 5 years since I stepped into a type 2. I guess you already know how to check this? Set speed manualy, checking each knot setting, and ask your navigation officer for endurance at current speed.

If you implement the use of SH3 Commander you can change the patrol grid you are ordered to exactly, or selectively randomize it, at the start of a new patrol. You could have all your patrols in ANxx if you wanted, until you accumulate enough renown to upgrade your boat. Happy hunting!

Plus, since you are running GWX you should know that GWX has removed the known rewarded for patrolling your grid.

Thanks for all the info, I forgot about the renown as I have not been overly worried about it until now when I discovered I was mighty short of what was needed for a type VII.
I am probably transiting the channel tonight but I doubt I will get to my grid because hopefully I would have run out of torpedoes long before then.

Are you sure you are not recharging the batteries at that time? I can't remember it being that low.
