I have absolutely failed.
First GWX career. 2nd patrol. U-51.
I sank over 10K tons of shipping. Patrolled AN52 for 24 hours. Returned to entrance of Kiel Canal. RAN AGROUND ON SEPT. 2, 1939. Career over. ![]()

That is why I still go around the long way via the Skagerrak. I won't risk the canal. Heard too many stories similar to yours.

I agree, I never take the Canal for the same reason. The added benefit to taking the long route is there is usually something to shoot at in GRID AN and AM ![]() |

I hit the edge of the canal while in Time Compression. Ruined my day. I'll just cheat and load an earlier save

I just warp back when I get to the start point. Saves the trouble.

I always take the Canal. Plot my own waypoints. Take my time. Enjoy the sights. Never a problem. Unlike real life time compression makes the long way easier and faster. In real life the Canal was built to save time and fuel. That's the way I play it.
I also stay in my assigned grid the entire patrol. The '24' hours thing is a game mechanism left over from the way they originallly planned it. Most unrealistic.
