I'm glad to see it, though this
Quote:
But correspondents say they could anger China, which has been in a dispute with Vietnam over islands in the area.
makes me wonder about the real motives. For both countries.

Not only this but we (the United States) are in talks to help them (Vietnam) to help set up a civilian nuclear program. I'll see if I can track down the link again.

Not sure how I feel about warming up to Vietnam.I suppose its a means to an end to protect freedom of navigation in the area.We really need to nip the china problem in bud before we're dealing with another WW II era Japan naval wise.

It's the nipping that's the problem. How does one nip a superpower?

Short of declaring war, which is something the general public hates (unless of course, you are declared war on first).

Found said link from previous post. Personally I see turning Vietnam into an ally against it's fellow communist neighbor as a good thing.

I play devil's advocate and say: I think china and Russia should conduct their next naval operation off the west coast of Washington, say 100 miles out.
time to push back.

Sure if Canada was claiming that water was theirs and China and Russia wanted to tell them, no it's not. Can't really play devil's advocate when the situation is changed. Also there was rumor of an Oscar II sitting outside the Juan De Fuca Strait back in the late 90's I think it was. So it's not like they haven't been this way before.

Well, Russia's already resumed the flyovers and airspace probes.

I assume you mean the State of Washington. Joint Sino-Russkie naval ops on the Potomac would be strange...

Billion dollar/pound 21st century jet fighters escorting a thousand dollar bomber from the 1950's. If the Russians keep doing this they will run us in to bankruptcy just from keeping our fighters in the air.
